Before Emma could answer, his lips covered hers again. His Adam’s apple bobbed hard as he swallowed, breath uneven.
Half an hour later, Emma sat on her bed, staring at the box in her hands, then covered her face in silence.
What a fox. A total fox. She couldn’t resist at all–not even a little.
Beep!
Fox: ‘Wait for me to come back!‘
The message was from Alaric, sent just after he’d left the starrail. Even the contact name–Fox–had been set by him himself earlier, right in his room, using Emma’s lightcore. This man had an extremely clear understanding of who he was.
Emma took a deep breath and steadied her emotions before replying, ‘Be careful. Come back early.
The gift was accepted. The kiss had already happened. There was no point in overthinking it now.
So Emma stopped struggling with it and accepted everything openly.
Lucien came over with a plate of freshly cut–fruit. Seeing Emma happily playing with her lightcore, he smiled, picked up a piece, and held it to her lips. “What’s got you so happy? Eat something first.”
His gentle voice carried undisguised affection.
Emma instinctively opened her mouth and bit into the fruit Lucien offered. Sweet juice spread across her
tongue.
She set down her lightcore, picked up another piece of fruit, and brought it to Lucien’s mouth, her eyes curving into a smile. “Let’s eat together.”
Lucien smiled and leaned in to take the fruit from her hand.
After they finished, Emma leaned into his arms and asked softly, “We’ll reach the Central Planet tomorrow. Once we’re back… will you be busy again?”
“The Chitinids have been relatively quiet lately, so not too busy,” Lucien said, holding her close. His hand rested gently over her flat lower abdomen, his gaze tender. “I’ve already told Calum. Until our cub hatches, I won’t go back to the battlefield. Unless… things spiral completely out of control and I’m absolutely needed.”
He paused, then added calmly, “But don’t worry. With Calum and the others around, that situation is basically impossible.”
Hearing that, Emma suddenly looked up at him. “I heard that avian therians incubate eggs themselves. So when our cub is born, does that mean you’ll have to incubate it?”

Lucien nodded without hesitation, his tone full of pride. “Yes.”

Emma had never seen a male therian incubate an egg in person. She’d only watched educational footage on her lightcore.
According to those clips, avian therians would revert to their true form, use their soft belly feathers to build a warm nest, carefully place the egg inside, then lie over it day and night, guarding it without rest.
She looked at Lucien’s devastatingly handsome face, but her mind betrayed her, conjuring up the image of his old form–that dark, round little Coalball–solemnly crouched in a nest, protecting a single egg with his stubby wings.
“Pfft!” Emma burst out laughing. Her shoulders shook uncontrollably, and she couldn’t stop.
“Emma, is there something on my face?” Lucien asked, watching her laugh so hard she was nearly doubled over. He was puzzled.
Do I look funny today? What exactly is she laughing at?
“No!” Emma shook her head while laughing, tears welling up at the corners of her eyes. She struggled to explain. “I just suddenly imagined you turning into a little phoenix, lying in a nest incubating an egg, and it was just kind of funny.”
Lucien was speechless.
A subtle stiffness flashed across his handsome face. The corner of his mouth twitched as he looked at Emma, caught between laughter and helplessness. “Who told you I’d turn into a little phoenix and lie in a nest to incubate a cub?”
He sighed lightly. “Where did you hear that kind of rumor?”
“Isn’t that how it works?” Emma quickly pulled up her lightcore and showed him the article titled General Knowledge of Egg Incubation. “That’s exactly what it says here.”
Lucien looked at the illustration–a cartoon bird sitting on a nest–and his mouth twitched again.
He reached out, cupped Emma’s face, and gently stroked her cheeks with his thumbs as he explained patiently, “That method is only for low–tier therians. I don’t need to do that. I just have to keep the egg on me every day.”
His ability was fire–based. He could precisely control temperature, giving the cub the most stable and comfortable incubation environment–far more efficient than reverting to his true form and sitting in a
nest.
As soon as Lucien finished speaking, his long fingers suddenly gave the soft flesh at Emma’s waist a light pinch.
