“I haven’t congratulated you yet on passing the Executive Council’s review today. In a few days, we shouldn’t be calling you commander anymore, but magistrate,” Lucien said as he walked over to Silas. He leaned in close and murmured in Silas‘ ear, “And at this rate, it won’t be long before I have to address you as Your Majesty.”
This guy hid it well. Working in the military’s command division while sticking his hand straight into the Executive Council.
“We’re family–no need for formalities,” Silas replied with a smile. “Even if everyone else bows to me in the future, you will always remain my family.”
Lucien let out a humorless laugh. “If you really saw us as family, you wouldn’t have kept every last detail from us. Do you have any idea how dangerous this is? Do you really think those old fossils won’t try to kill you?”
Silas absolutely knew they would. But once he chose this path, there was no turning back.
“Power belongs in the hands of those capable of wielding it.” Silas patted Lucien’s shoulder lightly.
“Are you mad? There’s nothing to be mad about.” He continued, “Think about it. I’m only getting started. If I need to tell you every step and ask for your help with every detail, wouldn’t that make me useless? Don’t worry–going forward, I won’t keep things from you. I’ll definitely need your help.”
“As if I’m dying to help you.”
Speaking as if I’m begging to help you! What am I, pathetic?
Lucien almost wanted to throw Silas out, together with Calum.
He turned toward his room but stopped after two steps, tossing something back to Silas. “I’m not helping you. I just don’t want something happening to you and making Emma sad.”
Silas glanced down at the item in his hand and smiled without responding. He uncurled a thick vine from behind him, wrapped it around the unconscious Calum, stuffed one of his flowers into Calum’s mouth, and promptly flung him out of the castle.
With that, Silas pocketed the item Lucien had given him and headed to his room.
The next morning, Calum woke with a splitting headache on the empty ground outside the castle. He looked around in confusion.

What happened last night? Why am I sleeping outside? He tried to piece it together. I came back from the military, got hungry, went to the kitchen, found some delicious fruit, and then…
Beyond that, his memory was blank.
He stood up and rubbed his lower back. It hurt–like someone had beaten him.
“Marshal, you’re awake.”
Silas‘ voice drifted from the castle entrance.
“Silas?”
Calum walked over, and when he saw Silas wearing an executive uniform instead of his commander attire, he let out a laugh. “Congratulations, magistrate.”
“Thank you.” Silas nodded with a smile.
Calum rolled his eyes. “Drop the act. The Executive Council isn’t like the command division. The old geezers backing them aren’t easy to deal with.”
“Thank you for the reminder, Marshal. I’ll be careful.” Silas handed him a slip of paper. “We’re family–no need to stand on ceremony. Help me take care of these two.”
Calum opened the note, glanced at the names, then glared at Silas. “I’m your superior, not your hitman.”
“Former superior,” Silas corrected. “Now we’re family. Isn’t family supposed to help one another?”
“Family, my ass.” Calum stared at him.
Silas continued, “Y stole some of Emy’s brewing fruit last night, got drunk, caused trouble in the castle, kept her awake half the night, so Lucien and I brought you outside to sober up. Before you deal with those two, you should think about how you’re going to explain yourself to Emy.”
Brew? Drunk? The fruit I ate was Emy’s brewing fruit? I got drunk and disturbed her rest? Calum’s heart clenched. She must be furious.
But then something felt off. He reached out and stopped Silas. “You’re lying. Even if I bothered Ms. Tibarn, she’s too kind to throw me out.”
