“Count it yourself. How many times did you toss me overboard out there? My command was perfectly fine, but because you didn’t feel like listening, you just tossed me off the ship and into the fight.”
Silas had been holding this in for a long time. Working under a foul–tempered superior who threatened him daily and never listened to a word he said was maddening.
Back then, Silas couldn’t win against Calum, so he had no chance to retaliate. But last night had offered the perfect opportunity–Silas certainly wasn’t going to let it slip.
Calum rubbed his nose, clearly guilty. “I know your command wasn’t the problem, but I could end the fight faster my way. Isn’t that better?”
Silas let out a cold laugh. “That’s not a good excuse for throwing me off the warship multiple times.”
Calum fell silent.
Seeing Calum speechless, Silas went on. “And before I tossed you out, I fed you my petals and had the guards watching you from the shadows. I made sure you’d be fine. That’s already a lot better than what you did to me back then.”
When Calum had hurled him off the ship, Silas had known Calum wouldn’t let him die. But he certainly hadn’t escaped unscathed. As a petalyn therian, his ability hadn’t been nearly as strong then, and he lacked the offensive power other therians naturally had. He had paid dearly for it.
“Forget it. Let’s call it even.”
Calum knew this was a losing fight, and he also knew he’d been in the wrong at the time. Before, he wouldn’t have cared. But Silas was now Emma’s primary mate. If he decided to complain to her… Calum would be doomed.
“The two people you listed on that note–I’ll take care of them for you before sundown today. But you can’t tell Ms. Tibarn about anything that happened between us.”
Silas smiled. “If I wanted to tell Emy, she would’ve known ages ago. I wouldn’t have waited
until now.”
His private grudges with Calum had no need to be dragged in front of Emy and give her needless headaches.
After watching Silas depart on the airship, Calum immediately returned to the castle. He went to his room first, took a long, thorough shower, and changed into something flattering.

He had heard she was going out shopping for the day, so he had purposely finished work ahead of time just so he could accompany her.
All that said, it was Malrik’s turn to keep Emma company that day,
Upstairs, Marcus had just stepped out of Emma’s room. As he looked up, he found himself face–to–face with a very carefully groomed Calum. Marcus gave him a slow once–over, the corner of his mouth lifting in a faint, mocking arc.
“Well, well. The marshal sobered up?” Marcus‘ voice dripped with sarcasm. “Do you remember anything you did after getting drunk last night?”
Calum’s face froze instantly, his breath catching “I… wasn’t I thrown out of the castle and had a nap? What else did I do?”
A bad feeling hit him suddenly.
“You did nap,” Marcus agreed, his near–lifeless expression full of disdain. “But I don’t know- did you sleep comfortably in my arms?”
“W–What did you just say? I slept in your arms?!” Calum stared at him, horrified. “You’re joking, right?”
Even in death, he would never willingly sleep in Marcus‘ arms.
“You don’t believe me?” Marcus pushed open Emma’s door. “You can ask Ms. Tibarn. She saw everything.”
“No–don’t.” Calum grabbed Marcus‘ wrist on reflex, stopping him from opening the door. Through clenched teeth, he asked, “What will it take for you never to mention this again?”
Had I really been that deranged, drunk–running into Marcus‘ arms to sleep? Was I drunk or brain- damaged?
Marcus slumped against the wall in his usual half–dead posture, tilting his head as he pretended to consider. “I don’t need anything. Status doesn’t interest me. So… give me your next slot to accompany Ms. Tibarn. Do that, and I’ll never bring this up again.”
“In your dreams.” Calum rejected him instantly. He barely got to spend a few days with Emma each month–absolutely not.
“Then there’s nothing to talk about.”
Seeing that his attempt to squeeze in one extra chance to accompany Emma had failed, Marcus rolled his eyes, suddenly straightened, shoved open Emma’s bedroom door, and
