Marcus charged straight at her like a mad beast.

He had abandoned all defense. Every strike he made was a full–on assault, each blow reckless and savage, like he wanted to bleed
with her.
His claws carved through the air with a shrill screech. Ice blades exploded around him and fired in every direction. He did not care if they cut into his own flesh.
“You lunatic! You’ve completely lost it!” Dahlia screamed, furious and shaken.
She slashed him open again and again, but each blow sent the same pain rebounding into her, three times as strong.
Still, when Marcus lunged once more, she had no choice but to strike back.
Her black claws tore into his body, ripping long gashes that cut straight to the bone. Her venom seeped deep into the wounds.
But Marcus did not even blink. He acted like pain did not exist. Blood spilled down his frame as he snapped his jaws shut and tore a huge piece off the plating on her back.
A burst of wet flesh and shell followed.
Then came the roar. Deep and raw, ripped straight from his lungs.
He kept tearing her apart. His claws and ice blades raked through her armor.
She fought back just as hard. Her claws and wings lashed across his chest and shoulders, leaving her own trails of destruction.
The field turned into chaos. Shell and fur flew in all directions. Screams and shrieks rose over the carnage.
Marcus was soaked in blood. His white fur was now a mottled mess of red and gray, shredded and oozing with venom. But his eyes burned like pale blue fire, colder than the wind, hotter than the sun.
Dahlia looked worse. Her armor had started to split apart. Thick green venom gushed out of every crack. It covered her skin, coated her claws, dripped down her face. Her wings were in tatters. She looked like she had been thrown through a shredder.
“You freak! Stay away from me!”
She hissed through clenched teeth while she kept fighting him off. The way he kept charging at her with no concern for his own body made her sick to her stomach.
She should have run when she had the chance. She never should have picked this fight.
Somewhere behind her, Calum had already retreated without a sound. His huge tiger body loomed in the distance. His sharp eyes never left Marcus.
He was keeping watch. He was waiting to step in if Marcus collapsed.
Inside the ship, Emma’s breath hitched as she stared at the screen.
Her chest twisted. She knew Marcus would not die.

But watching him bleed like this? It still tore at her.
Beside her, Kieran spoke softly.
“Marcus is right at the edge of ranking up. Just a little more.”
Back in the fight-
Dahlia finally sensed something was off.
He was not trying to kill her. He was using her.
She was just a grindstone. He was pushing himself harder and harder, sharpening his power on her body.

Even if she managed to kill him, the result would still be a disaster. And she was not even close to winning. His aura was still climbing.
She had to leave. Right now.
She faked a strike. Then her broken wings slammed downward, kicking up a burst of toxic wind meant to drive him back.
Her figure turned into a streak of black. She launched herself into the sky, flying upward at full speed.
She did not make it far. The moment she left the ground, an invisible force slammed into her from every direction.
It was not a wall, but it might as well have been. The pressure squeezed in like the ocean had dropped onto her shoulders. She froze. Her wings stopped. Her body locked up mid–air. She could not move.
What was happening?
Panic surged. Her eyes darted around the field. It was not Calum. It was not Marcus.
Then who?
Hér head whipped toward the ship.
Through the window, a pair of calm, pale pink eyes stared right at her.
Him?
That merfolk standing beside Emma?
No way.
Kieran stood still, hands behind his back. When Dahlia’s gaze locked onto him, he returned the stare.
His expression stayed calm. But the chill behind his eyes clawed through her like a winter gust.
She did not have time to react.
A sharp pain ripped straight through her chest.
A long, solid spike of ice had pierced her clean through.
