If they could have negotiated with Calum, would they still be holding this meeting? It was precisely because Calum wouldn’t budg that they had turned their attention to Lucien instead.
After all, Lucien was now a genuine Rank 13 powerhouse.
In terms of strength, he surpassed Calum. In terms of intelligence and methods, he was no less capable. In their eyes, Lucien had both the ability and the qualifications to replace Calum as marshal.
As long as Lucien was willing to work with them and push Calum out, their interests would remain intact.
What they hadn’t expected was that Lucien would be so unwavering in his support of Calum–completely impossible to sway.
‘Lucien, what kind of attitude is that?” The general was so furious that the tip of his mustache trembled, his finger shaking as he pointed. “We’re doing this for the good of the military! Calum is too autocratic–he wages war without considering the consequences and has damaged the interests of countless families. As a Rank 13, you should stand up for justice, not blindly follo his orders. Don’t you have any pride or ambition as a powerhouse?”
‘Pride? Ambition?” Lucien let out a cold laugh, his gaze sharp as ice as it swept over them. “I may not have much ambition, but I’m not stupid either. You want to use me as a blade to deal with Calum? And you think you’re worthy of that?”
He suddenly leaned forward, bracing both hands against the table as his strikingly handsome face closed in on the general. “Lister carefully. I have no interest in the marshal’s position–and even less interest in your worthless gains.”
Straightening, Lucien calmly smoothed the wrinkles from his sleeve. “The only reason I’m still sitting here listening to your nonsense isn’t for power. It’s because I am also a part of the Empire. The land beneath my feet belongs to the Empire. Since I’ve enjoyed its protection, then in times of crisis, protecting it is my responsibility.”
f the foundation collapsed, what would anything else stand on? If even the nation ceased to exist, what could he possibly use to žive Emma a safe haven?
After his tirade, Lucien didn’t spare a glance at the shifting expressions on their faces. He turned on his heel and strode out of the conference room, leaving the group of senior officials exchanging looks before the meeting dissolved in disarray.
But he had barely walked far from the conference room when an aged yet steady voice called out from behind him.
‘Lucien, wait.”
Lucien slowed slightly and glanced sideways at the person approaching.
t was the current patriarch of the Maulions, Leonel Rysid–also a marshal, second only to Calum in status. The Maulions held mmense power on the Central Planet, with a prestigious standing.
‘Marshal Rysid. What is it?” Lucien quirked a brow, his tone showing little deference despite the man’s rank.
Leonel smiled, his clouded yet calculating eyes gleaming faintly.
He dismissed the attendants at his side and stepped closer, lowering his voice. “Lucien, there were too many eyes in the meeting just now, so I couldn’t say certain things. But with your intelligence, I’m sure you’ll understand with just a hint.”

Lucien looked at him with a half–smile. “Oh? I’m listening.”
Seeing that Lucien was willing to hear him out, Leonel felt a flicker of satisfaction.

“You may already be Rank 13, surpassing Calum in strength,” he began slowly, “but in terms of status, Calum is still the Empire’s marshal, commanding vast forces. One man below all others. And you–no matter what–still fall short of him in rank and authority.”
A trace of mockery flickered through Lucien’s eyes, but he didn’t interrupt.
