**TITLE: My Heart Waited Too Long and Choosing Freedom 103**
**CONTENT: Chapter 103 Just a Pawn**
Tonight, there was an unusual depth to Ethan’s demeanor, an unexpected thoughtfulness that caught Amelia off guard. He had even informed her of his whereabouts, an act so out of character that it set off alarm bells in her mind.
Something felt off, and she couldn’t shake the feeling that his unusual behavior signaled impending trouble.
Yet, almost immediately, Amelia reminded herself that it didn’t truly matter.
This would likely be her final appearance as his wife before the divorce was finalized.
With that thought weighing heavily on her, she resolved to keep the atmosphere as peaceful as possible and assist him in concluding this last act of their shared life.
“Alright, got it. Thank you,” she said to the server, her voice steady despite the turmoil within. She lifted the hem of her gown and began her ascent up the elegant spiral staircase that led to the second floor.
As she reached the hallway above, a sense of quiet enveloped her, the silence broken only by the soft sound of her footsteps on the plush carpet.
Amelia approached the closed door of the private lounge, her heart racing as she prepared to enter. However, just as her hand reached for the doorknob, faint voices wafted through the air, halting her in her tracks.
She recognized those voices all too well; they belonged to Ethan’s old friends—men who had shared both childhood adventures and business ambitions with him.
A playful voice broke through the air, teasingly half-laughing, “Ethan, what’s gotten into you tonight? Not only did you bring Amelia to a gala, but you’re acting like a devoted husband in front of everyone. Are you finally settling down, wild boy? Could it be that you’re actually falling for Ms. Harlow?”
Ethan’s laugh followed, cold and laced with mockery, “She wishes.”
Two simple words, and Amelia felt her heart plummet, her face paling outside the door.
Ethan continued, his tone flat and devoid of emotion, “I brought her because my family insisted. The Everetts might be attending tonight. My company has a project in the works, and we need their collaboration.”
Hannah’s voice chimed in, tinged with surprise, “But Ethan, didn’t everyone say that Ms. Harlow is no longer connected to them? Would they truly consider working with our company just because of her?”
“They don’t have a choice,” Ethan replied, impatience creeping into his voice, though he maintained the confidence of a strategist. “The Everetts aren’t entirely heartless. After we married, one of my relatives ran into Evan overseas. He even inquired about Amelia’s well-being.”
“So,” Ethan continued, as if appraising an object on display, “regardless of how difficult Mason is to approach now, as long as we keep Amelia happy and encourage her to bring it up, it will benefit us.”
Each word struck Amelia like a sharp thorn embedded in her chest.
A bitter smile crept onto her lips. So, this was how Ethan regarded her—not as a partner, not as a person, but merely as a pawn to be leveraged for profit.
Inside the room, one of Ethan’s friends let out a knowing laugh. “Oh! So that’s what’s happening! I should have guessed; you always think several steps ahead, man!”
