**TITLE: My Heart Waited Too Long and Choosing Freedom**
**Chapter 149: Good Deed**
In the dim light of the car, Amelia caught a glimpse of Mason’s eyes through the rearview mirror. They were a fathomless shade, often difficult to decipher, yet today they seemed to carry a gentler warmth, a softness that was almost disarming.
“Okay,” he murmured, his voice barely above a whisper.
The air inside the vehicle was thick with warmth, creating a fleeting illusion that for a moment, they were a genuine family, bound by love and shared experiences. It was a comforting thought, one that Amelia clung to as if it could shield her from the reality of their situation.
However, as the Bentley came to a halt in front of the imposing, cold iron gates of the Rowe Estate, that comforting warmth dissipated like mist under the morning sun.
With a heavy heart, Amelia unbuckled her seat belt, the click echoing in the silence. She turned to Hayden, her voice tinged with reluctance, “I’m home now. I’ll come find you tomorrow, okay?”
“Okay! Bye!” Hayden chirped, waving goodbye with an innocent smile that tugged at Amelia’s heartstrings.
As she stepped out of the car, she hesitated for a brief moment, casting a glance back at Mason. He remained seated, his gaze steady and unwavering, but the silence between them spoke volumes.
With a small, almost imperceptible nod, she turned away and walked towards the entrance of the house, the weight of the day pressing heavily on her shoulders.
Upon entering, she was met by the sight of Ethan rushing down the staircase, car keys in hand, as if he were late for an important appointment. They nearly collided, and she could feel the tension in the air as he halted abruptly, his eyes scanning her face with a casual curiosity.
“Where did you go?” he asked, his tone nonchalant, but Amelia could sense the underlying concern.
“My studio. Something came up,” she replied, her gaze dropping to the floor, avoiding his penetrating stare.
He merely hummed in acknowledgment, his expression unreadable, before brushing past her and heading out the door. Amelia knew exactly where he was headed—back to the hospital to visit Hannah, and the thought twisted her stomach in knots.
A bitter laugh escaped her lips, a sound laced with self-derision.
Not long after, Grace and Fiona returned home, their presence confirming Amelia’s suspicions—they too had gone to see Hannah.
As they gathered around the long dining table for dinner, the atmosphere felt heavy with unspoken words. Grace, ever the dramatic one, took a sip of her soup and let out a theatrical sigh.
“Hannah is really so pitiful,” she lamented, her voice dripping with exaggerated sympathy. “It’s such a shame she ended up with the heartless Boyds.”
As if recalling a fond memory, Grace continued, “She used to be such a good girl. Sweet and polite. Always respectful toward me. If it weren’t for what happened later… Life really does play tricks on people.”
Amelia felt her heart constrict. She couldn’t help but remember how this so-called “good girl” had once schemed against her, using her own daughter as a pawn to elevate her status. Just not long ago, Hannah had been spewing venom about Grace, her face twisted in disdain.
