Hearing his words, a faint thrill of triumph welled up in Hannah’s heart. She obediently opened her mouth and swallowed the pill. A soft blush rose to her cheeks, her eyes shining as she said, “Ethan, you really do take such good care of me.”
Her helpless, dependent look stirred all of Ethan’s protective instincts.
He let out a sigh, guilt heavy in his voice. “When it comes down to it, this is all my fault. If Amelia hadn’t thrown a fit and pushed my mom to drive you and Isla cut, you never would have had to go through so much. So, taking care of you is the least I can do.”
Hannah lowered her head even further and let out a gentle sigh. “Honestly… I understand.
“Ms. Harlow is your legal wife, after all. Of course she wants all your attention on her. And now that she’s got the Everetts backing her, it’s normal for her to act out a bit.”
Her voice dropped even softer, almost like she was talking to herself. “It’s fine, Ethan. No matter what she does to us, I… I can put up with it.”
Every word hit Ethan right where it hurt.
Hannah is always so understanding, thoughtful, and so considerate.
She was nothing like Amelia, who only gave him the cold shoulder and sarcasm.
“If only Amelia were half as sensible as you.” Ethan’s tone was dripping with disdain. “But Hannah, you shouldn’t feel inferior. And you shouldn’t let her get to you. What’s so special about her background anyway? She only got lucky and was adopted by the Everetts for a few years, that’s all.”
He let out a cold laugh and went on, “Do you really think Mason cares about her that much? It’s just for show. He’s only doing it so nobody criticizes him for neglecting his adopted sister. Mason’s got his own career abroad–he’s not going to stick around forever. When he leaves, we’ll see what Amelia has left to show off. You have nothing to be afraid of.”
His words made Hannah even more pleased.
She nodded obediently, her voice as soft as ever. “Mm, I understand. I will keep that in mind.”
Inside, she could barely contain her excitement.
Ethan still had no idea about Amelia’s accident and hospitalization!
The ambulance had come, and Mason had come as well Yet even with all that commotion, Ethan had managed to miss everything.
This was almost too lucky for her!
Ethan sat with her a while longer, made sure her headache eased up, then watched her drift off to sleep before finally leaving the side building.
As he opened the door to the main building, he was greeted by silence and darkness.
He flipped on the entryway light.
The hall was spotless. The shiny marble floor reflected the chandelier overhead, not a thing out of place.

That shocking bloodstain from earlier had been cleaned up perfectly by Hannah.
As Ethan changed his shoes, his gaze landed by chance on a tall vase near the door.
The vase was lying on its side on the carpet.
He frowned and went over to put it back in place.
He figured some careless maid must have knocked it over while cleaning. He didn’t dwell on it.
He had no clue that just over an hour ago, this cold vase had been lifted high and was about to be brought down toward his wife’s fragile head.
He walked upstairs, glanced at Amelia’s room out of habit as he passed.
The door was tightly shut, with no light shining from underneath the door.
She’s already asleep?
The thought flashed through Ethan’s mind.
He was secretly relieved that she was asleep. That way, he wouldn’t have to look at her cold face or listen to her barbed remarks.
