However, as soon as he said that, he waved his hand and told the maid, “Forget it, don’t call her. Let her sleep.”
Maybe Amelia felt upset from being ignored by him last night and was using this as a way to get attention.
He couldn’t be bothered to care.
“Yes, sir.” The maid bowed and stepped back.
Isla picked up a piece of toast, looking as obedient as ever, but a flicker of panic flashed beneath her lowered gaze.
Ethan didn’t notice anything unusual about her. After finishing breakfast, he got up to change clothes, planning to drop Isla off at school before heading to work.
He dropped Isla off at school and watched her walk through the gates. That put him in a pretty good mood.
He rested one hand on the steering wheel and picked up his phone with the other out of habit.
Without thinking, he reached for his phone to call Amelia.
It wasn’t out of concern for her—it was to put her in her place.
He wanted to let her know that just because she was refusing to cooperate didn’t mean anything would change. He made the rules in the family.
But before he could dial, Mason’s call suddenly popped up and filled the entire screen.
Ethan frowned, confused.
Why was Mason calling him at this hour?
Was he about to lecture him again about Amelia’s petty problems?
He felt a flicker of impatience but still answered the call, keeping his tone polite. “Mason, you’re calling me so early. What’s up?”
On the other end, there was none of the usual small talk.
There was only silence. It was so heavy and cold, even through the phone.
Ethan was about to lose patience when Mason finally spoke. Every word sounded sharp with

bitterness.
“Ethan, come to Maple Glen Hospital.”

Ethan’s brows drew tight. He fought back his irritation. “Why should I
go
there?”
On the other end, Mason almost scoffed.

“Amelia fell down the stairs last night. She’s seriously hurt.
“She’s in the hospital now.”
Ethan’s mind went blank.
“That’s impossible!” he blurted out. “She was fine when I got home last night!”
“Fine?” Mason’s voice turned even more mocking. “Heh… Come see for yourself.”
Then the call ended, cutting off in a cold, final click.
Ethan stood frozen, the silence after the call and Mason’s last words echoing in his ear.
A sense of dread filled his chest.
It couldn’t be true.
Mason must be exaggerating.
Amelia was always good at acting pitiful, trying to win sympathy.
Maybe she just twisted her ankle and was making a big deal out of it to embarrass him.
He tried to convince himself, but his heart pounded so hard it drowned out his own excuse.
Ethan’s face darkened. He slammed his foot on the gas and spun the wheel, pulling off a risky U–turn in the middle of the street. Car horns blared as angry shouts erupted around him.
But Ethan didn’t hear any
of it.
He needed to see for himself what had happened at the hospital.
He soon pulled up outside the hospital.
Mason was already there, waiting at the entrance.
Ethan rushed over, breathless. “How’s Amelia? What happened? Wasn’t she fine at home? How did she fall down the stairs?”

The questions poured out of him in a rush.
Mason didn’t answer a single one.
