She’d somehow heard that Ethan was back and couldn’t wait to call, acting like the lady of the
Rowes.
“I still have some work at the office. Not sure when I’ll be done,” Ethan said, glancing back at Amelia in the living room. His voice dropped lower. “I’ll get in touch when I’m free.”
“But…” Hannah’s voice immediately grew whiny and hurt. “Isla made a painting today. She said it’s of you and has been begging to show it to you. She hasn’t seen you in so long. Are you really not coming home tonight?”
Ethan couldn’t be too harsh with a child, so he gave in. “Alright. Once I finish here, I’ll come back tonight.”
After hanging up, Ethan stood on the balcony for a while, letting his expression settle, before heading back into the living room.
But when he returned, his gaze kept darting away, deliberately avoiding any eye contact with Amelia.
The more he did that, the more it confirmed what Amelia had already suspected.
Rubbing her temples, Amelia let out a tired sigh and spoke softly to Fiona, “Fiona, I feel a little dizzy. I want to go back to my room and rest.”
It was the most polite way to excuse herself.

Seeing Amelia’s pale face, Fiona didn’t press further. Concerned, she quickly stood up. “Okay. Get some rest. We won’t bother you.”
She took hold of Ethan, who looked like he wanted to say something, and guided him toward the door. Turning back, she reminded Amelia, “We’ll come see you together tomorrow. Is there anything special you want to eat? I can have the kitchen make it for you.”
Leaning on her cane, Amelia slowly rose with Mason’s help and shook her head at Fiona, offering a tired little smile.
“No, Fiona. The doctor said I need to watch my diet lately.”
On the way back, Ethan rubbed his forehead, feeling exhausted.
But Fiona obviously had no intention of letting him off the hook so easily.
The silence on the way was the calm before the storm.

“Ethan.”

Fiona’s voice came, calm and steady, without a hint of emotion, and it made Ethan tense automatically.
“What really happened with Amelia’s injury?”
Ethan’s heart skipped a beat.
He turned his head and saw Fiona staring at him without blinking.

“Grandma, haven’t the police already figured it out? It was just that maid, Elodie. She was jealous of Amelia and got confused for a moment, and that’s why she pushed her. I had the butler fire her and the police took her in,” Ethan said casually, as if it were no big deal.
But Fiona’s face didn’t show any sign of being convinced.
“A maid’s mistake?” she repeated slowly, her voice cold. “If it really was just a maid, why would Amelia rather stay with outsiders and refuse to come home?”
Ethan’s guilt could no longer be hidden.
“She she’s just still mad at me,” he said stubbornly, trying to defend himself.
…
“Mad at you?” Fiona’s long–suppressed anger finally erupted. “I don’t think she’s mad at you. I think she’s disappointed in you! Ethan, you’d better tell me the truth.
“Don’t think you can fool me. If you don’t talk now, I’ll have the driver turn around, and I’ll ask Amelia myself! I want to see what could make her refuse–even to me, an elder!”
“Don’t!” Ethan blurted it out.
Under Fiona’s piercing gaze, he finally gave in.
“Fine. I’ll tell you.
“Amelia got hurt because Elodie pushed her. The police confirmed that. But…” He hesitated, his voice carrying a trace of frustration. “Before that, Amelia and Isla had a small fight over something. So Amelia thought it was Isla who pushed her on purpose. She even called the police and insisted they take Isla in.”
As he spoke, Ethan’s brows furrowed tightly, as if Amelia were being unreasonable.
“Grandma, think about it. How old is Isla? She’s just a kid! Even if Amelia has issues with Hannah and resents her, how could she try to blame a child?
“I was just too angry at the time. I thought she was making a huge deal out of nothing, so I said

“Then she got upset. She handled the discharge papers behind my back and moved straight into Mason’s place.”
He shrugged, as if everything had started with Amelia being unreasonable.
Fiona’s expression grew darker with every word he said.
“Ethan, do you really think Amelia would frame a child for no reason?”
Ethan hesitated. “I…”
Fiona cut him off. “Listen to me first. If Amelia clearly saw who pushed her, then what she said is the truth.
“She wanted to get rid of Hannah and her daughter–she had plenty of ways to confront Hannah directly. Why would she go out of her way to target a child? She knew that if she did this, you’d probably not believe her and side with the child. So why would she still do it?”
