“Joking or not, to me, that’s the truth.”

David seemed to realize she wasn’t going to back down. He changed his approach and spoke in a softer tone. “Fine, let’s not talk about this for now. I want you to come to the Harlow Manor tonight. I just want to ask you in person, why did you have to take things all the way to divorce when everything was fine?”
But Amelia didn’t want to set foot in that suffocating place ever again.
“I don’t have time. I’m not going back.” She refused without hesitation.
“You-” David’s anger started to rise again.
“If none of you want to own up to it, and you think the 30 million dollars was just some kind of joke, then I’ll have no choice but to get my lawyer involved.”
She paused, then added, “Oh, and I forgot to mention. When Beatrice first brought up that deal, just in case, I recorded the whole conversation.”
“You…” This time, David was really stunned by what she said.
Amelia had no patience left for his yelling. She hung up right away.
The car was quiet again.
Mason, who was driving, had caught most of the conversation. He slowed down, glanced over, and silently checked to see if she was alright.
Amelia explained, “It was my grandpa. Everyone in the Harlows is terrible.
“He’s the one who kicked me out and left me to fend for myself. Later, when I married Ethan and was “useful” again, he tried to bring up the things they’d done for me. He sounded like I owed the Harlaws for life, like I should work myself to the bone for them.”
She shook her head with a self–mocking expression on her face.
“You don’t even know–on his last birthday, he called me into his study alone and actually used a ruler to hit my palm.”
She talked about it lightly, as if it were some kind of joke.
“He hit you?” Mason’s voice turned cold, a trace of anger in his eyes.
“Yes.” Amelia answered softly.

The chill in Mason’s eyes grew stronger.
He was silent for a moment before speaking slowly.
“That day… actually, I went to Harlow Manor too.”
Amelia looked at him in surprise.
Mason kept his eyes on the road. The sharp lines of his profile looked tense in the dim light. “I was planning to see you, but I found you passed out on the side of the road.
“You looked really unwell, so I had you taken back to Harlow Manor. I figured you’d be safe at home, so I didn’t stay. I didn’t know anything else had happened after that.”
His words made Amelia’s heart tremble just a little.
She shook her head. The darkness in her eyes faded, replaced by a gentle smile. “It’s alright. It’s all in the past now.”
Just then, the light ahead turned red, and the Bentley came to a smooth stop.
In the shifting light and shadow inside the car, Mason turned to look at her. His eyes were unusually focused.
He spoke in a deep voice, as if making a solemn promise. “Amelia, I promise you, the next time something like that happens…”
He paused, staring straight at her, his words clear and firm. “I’ll be there.”
His gaze was so intense, Amelia’s heart skipped a beat.
She looked away in a hurry, not daring to meet his eyes again.
But the moment she turned away, her phone screen lit up again.
It was Fiona calling.
A strong sense of irony rose up in Amelia’s heart.
they all held the same view.
Ethan was the one who started all this, but not one of them ever blamed him. Instead, they all turned their questions and pressure on her, like she was the only one responsible for the divorce.
They acted as if everything could go back to normal if she just kept giving in and putting up

with it, as if all the wrongs could just be swept under the rug.
What a joke.
She put her phone on Do Not Disturb.
Mason had booked a seat at a private steakhouse to celebrate her fresh start.

But somehow, word had gotten out. When their car got close to the restaurant, she could see a bunch of paparazzi camped out in a hidden corner by the door.
“Looks like dinner’s not happening tonight.” Mason frowned, clearly annoyed.
Amelia watched the paparazzi, feeling helpless.
She didn’t care if people took her picture, but she didn’t want Mason dragged into her mess.
“Why don’t we just go home?” She turned to Mason and suggested, “We can eat at home. No need to insist on eating out.”
Mason glanced at her. Seeing she seemed calm and natural, he nodded, turned the wheel, and headed toward his estate.
On the way back, Amelia noticed the estate was unusually quiet.
