When the dinner finally ended and they stepped out of the restaurant, the night wind hit Amelia’s face. The alcohol finally kicked in.
Mason held her as she stumbled through the doorway. The cold air made her shiver, but instead of sobering her up, it seemed to flip some hidden switch inside her.
Just moments ago, Amelia had been soft and limp, barely able to stand. Now she suddenly turned warm, stubborn, and full of energy.
She clung tightly to Mason’s shoulders and neck, practically hanging off him, and mumbled loudly, “Mason … carry me!”
The damp stone pavement outside and the cool night breeze made her jolt again.
Mason kept his grip steady, feeling her full weight leaning on him. He frowned.
He tried to straighten her up, his voice firm and a little cold. “Amelia, stand up. You’re drunk. I’m not carrying you.”
He raised his hand to flag down a passing taxi. “We’re going straight back to the hotel.”
That move seemed to set her off.
Amelia refused to let go; she tightened her arms like a stubborn koala, locking them around his neck. She buried her face into the hollow of his shoulder and spoke in a slurred but threatening tone, “No. I want you to carry me. If you don’t, I won’t talk to you ever again!”
The last sentence came out surprisingly clear, like a child throwing a tantrum over candy.
Off to the side, Lily and Tim, who had been watching with arms around each other, finally lost it. They burst out laughing.
Lily shot Tim a look, then turned to Mason with a teasing smile. “Oh, come on, Mr. Everett. Just give in. You have no idea what sort of privilege she’s giving you. I dragged her to bars all week, and she wouldn’t touch a single sip of alcohol. Then you show up, and she gets drunk. Look at her now. She probably feels safe with
you around.”
Tim winked and added, “Yeah, Mason, just do it. Don’t worry, I swear I won’t take pictures or post anything on Instagram. Your cool, tough image is totally safe.”
Mason shot them both an annoyed look. The warning in his eyes had zero effect.
With the unhappy little moan that came from the person clinging to him, he finally sighed in defeat and slowly bent down in the night air.

It was surrender.
“Are you two going to help or what?” he urged.

Lily and Tim rushed over at once–one supporting, one lifting. Together, they hauled the completely limp Amelia onto his broad back.
The moment she settled in, Amelia looked pleased.
She wrapped her arms tightly around Mason’s shoulders, shifted until she found a comfortable spot, then lifted one hand and pointed ahead, toward a dimly lit path. “Go! Mason, let’s way!”

“Where do you think you’re going, princess?” Lily grabbed her wandering hand, half laughing, half helpless. “Mr. Everett can carry you for a bit, then we’re going back to the hotel to sleep.”
“No!” Amelia frowned right away. She shrank closer to Mason’s back, like she was running from something. “I don’t want to go with you.”
Then she leaned in close to Mason’s ear, her warm breath brushing his skin. The ticklish heat made his heart jolt.
She whispered softly, “Mason, let’s go over there. Look, the stars are so bright.”
Mason followed the direction she was pointing.
It was the very end of the shopping street. Decorative lights glittered everywhere, bright as daylight, leaving no trace of stars in the sky.
He realized something at that very moment. Tonight, he had run into real trouble. She wouldn’t stop until she had worn him out completely.
He turned his head and said to Lily and Tim, “You two take a taxi and head back.”
Lily immediately gave him a sympathetic look, but her tone was full of wicked delight. “Got it! Then I’ll officially hand the princess to you!”
With that, she grabbed Tim. The two of them quickly flagged down a taxi and disappeared into the night in seconds. A moment too slow, Mason might drag them back to help.
Mason sighed helplessly. He took Amelia’s backpack off her shoulders, hung it around his neck, and then carried this sweet burden on his back, resigned to his fate as he walked in the direction she pointed.
From that moment on, Amelia treated him like a voice–controlled GPS.

Lying on his back, she kept giving him orders. One moment, she told him to go straight, saying the stone bridge ahead looked pretty. The next moment, she insisted they turn back, claiming the lamp post they had just passed was more interesting.
The stone paths were uneven, but Mason walked steadily.
He carried her back and forth along the same stretch of road.
Luckily, his stamina had always been good. If it were anyone else, they would have been completely exhausted by now.
But even someone made of steel couldn’t take endless back–and–forth forever.
After more than half an hour, sweat appeared at Mason’s temples, and his breathing grew slightly heavy.
