Ethan’s throat tightened.

He took a deep breath and rushed to explain. “Mrs. Everett, I didn’t know about the divorce! Amelia hid the divorce papers in a pile of company documents. I trusted her, so I signed without realizing what it was.”
He clenched his fists, trying to sound convincing. “She kept it from me for a whole month! I swear, I never once thought about divorcing her.”
The living room fell silent.
Then Evan spoke.
“Oh?” Evan’s tone lifted slightly, edged with sarcasm. “So the rumors about you and Ms. Gray were all just Amelia’s misunderstanding too?
“You didn’t bring that woman and her daughter into the home you shared with Amelia? You didn’t make her live with that discomfort day after day?”
The string of questions darkened Ethan’s expression at once.
He shifted awkwardly and defended himself. “I helped them out of basic decency. Isla’s father was my childhood friend. I couldn’t just turn my back on them.”
Maybe realizing how weak his excuse sounded, Ethan’s pride flared into irritation.
He straightened his back, his voice turning cold. “But those are my private matters. If you wanted to ask me to come in here to scold me, you don’t have the right to use these things to accuse me.”
The gentle look on Nora’s face vanished. She let out a cold, open laugh.
“From the day Amelia was adopted into our family, she has been one of us.
“As her mother and her brother, why wouldn’t we have the right to question you?”
She paused, her eyes sweeping over Ethan’s face as it slowly flushed with embarrassment. Her tone grew sharper.
“Do
you really think that just because we lived overseas for years, we actually cut her off, and you could bully her without anyone stepping in?”
Ethan’s guilt turned into anger.

He jumped up from the couch, his eyes flashing with a wild edge.

“Family?” he sneered, repeating the word with clear malice. “What a joke! Amelia had divorced me. Now, she’d gotten involved with your biological son! If you call yourselves her family, then what does that make them? Incest?”
He almost roared out those words, a twisted sense of revenge in his voice. He stared hard at Nora and Evan, as if he had finally grabbed hold of their weakness.
“Since you questioning me, then I want an explanation from you too!”
“You what did you just say?”
…
Nora let out a short gasp, her face clearly flashing with shock.
She quickly turned her head and exchanged a look with Evan, who sat in a wheelchair beside her.
What? Isn’t this good news?
The joy in Nora’s eyes was almost impossible to hide.
She cleared her throat and forced that excitement down. She composed the expression on her face into a calm, unreadable mask.
Then, she spoke lightly.
“So?
“What about it?”
Ethan froze.
“Y–you seriously think this doesn’t matter?” His voice was filled with disbelief.
“What’s the problem?” Evan slowly turned his wheelchair to face Ethan.
His eyes were gentle yet painfully clear and cold, like a mirror reflecting all of Ethan’s embarrassment.
“Amelia left you and chose Mason. That only proves one thing. He’s better than
you.
“You made mistakes in your marriage and lost the woman you love. Instead of reflecting on your mistake, you blame others and judge her choices.” Evan paused. “Mr. Rowe, don’t you find that ridiculous?”
Nora smoothly picked up the thread, her tone cool with faint mockery. “Mr. Rowe, there’s no

need to act like the world has ended and accuse everyone here. Amelia and Mason aren’t related by blood. Them being together–who does that hurt?”
She adjusted the shawl around her shoulders and looked at Ethan’s pale, stiff face. The happiness in her eyes was almost spilling over.
Finished
“To be honest, if Amelia really ends up staying with Mason and becomes my daughter–in–law someday, I’d be thrilled.”
Listening to the two of them speak in perfect agreement, Ethan finally realized, slowly and painfully, that stepping into this house tonight had been nothing but humiliation from start to finish.
The moral high ground he thought he held was nothing more than a joke to them.
“You two are completely unreasonable!”
He forced it out through clenched teeth.
Then, he turned and stormed out.
After he left, Nora could no longer hold back her excitement. She grabbed her son’s hand, her voice trembling with disbelief and joy. “Evan–oh my God. Did I hear that right? Amelia … she’s really with Mason now?”
A faint smile appeared on Evan’s calm face. He thought for a moment, then answered carefully. “Judging by how furious Ethan looked, it’s probably true. Even if it is, they probably just start dating.”
