Chapter 407 A Friendly Reminder

Amanda jumped in alarm and hurried around the desk, gently patting Amelia’s back to help her catch her breath, apologizing in a rush. “Oh no! Amelia, I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to! I was just… just too curious!”
It took Amelia a while to recover. She lifted her misty eyes and shot Amanda a look that was more amused than annoyed.
This girl really had a talent for bringing up the worst possible topic at the worst possible time.
She cleared her throat, which still felt a little irritated, forced herself to look stern, and scolded her with absolutely no real menace. “If you keep talking nonsense, don’t expect to see your bonus this month.”
“No, no, no! I was wrong! Ms. Harlow, you’re generous and forgiving!” Amanda immediately raised both hands in surrender. “I swear I won’t ever call you out to your face again!”
Amelia could not help laughing at her exaggerated reaction, and the lingering awkwardness eased.
She shook her head helplessly.
“Alright, enough fooling around.” Amelia straightened, pulled a portion of the document stack from her desk, and handed it to Amanda, shifting smoothly back into work mode. “These are the design team’s preliminary proposals. Take a look and flag the obvious data errors. Have them double–check everything before sending it back to me.”
“Got it, Amelia.” Amanda answered immediately, her tone serious now.
She hugged the files to her chest and turned to leave, but Amelia called out again.
“Wait.”
Amanda turned back, questioning.
There was a trace of hesitation in Amelia’s eyes, but she still lowered her voice and said, “About … Mr. Everett and me. Don’t mention it to anyone else in the department for now.”
Amanda understood instantly.
She clutched the folder to her chest, nodded solemnly, then raised a hand and mimed zipping her lips shut.
“Don’t worry, Amelia! I’m airtight!
“I’m totally on your side. No one’s getting a single word out of me!”
Seeing Amanda’s earnest, almost heroic loyalty, Amelia smiled and nodded. “Go.”
Once Amanda left, the office fell quiet again.
Amelia leaned back in her chair.
The fluster Amanda had stirred up earlier had finally settled.

Just then, the phone on her desk chimed.
A message from Tim popped up. “Short meeting in the top–floor conference room in 30 minutes.
Amelia immediately refocused and replied, “Okay.”
The top–floor conference room was reserved for senior management and was usually only used when major decisions were involved.
Today’s meeting clearly was not routine.
She did not waste time. She quickly wrapped up the urgent documents on her desk, stood, and straightened her appearance.
Stopping in front of the full–length mirror near her office door, she checked herself carefully. The redness in her face had mostly faded.
To reach the top floor, she needed the executive elevator..
Holding her folder, Amelia walked briskly to the elevator lobby and pressed the up button.
When the elevator arrived and the doors opened, Vince was already inside.
He clearly noticed her, and an unreadable smile crossed his face.
“Ms. Harlow, heading to a meeting?” he asked first, sounding polite enough.
“Mmh,” Amelia responded lightly, her eyes settling on the changing floor numbers. She had no interest in small talk.
But Vince had no intention of stopping.
He looked her over. His gaze lingered briefly on her face before he spoke in an offhand tone. “By the way, I saw you walk in this morning. Your boyfriend didn’t drive you to work today?”
There was something deliberately probing in his voice.
Amelia’s heart skipped, but her expression remained composed.
“No. He had something else to take care of today,” she answered evenly.
“Oh, I see.” Vince drew out the words, a faint smile curling at his lips.
A vague sense of discomfort settled over Amelia, though she could not yet pinpoint why.
“Ms. Harlow, you seem pretty close with Mr. Clem and Mr. Everett lately…”
After a short pause, Vince spoke again in the quiet elevator, his voice carrying a subtle chill. “At yesterday’s company dinner, you all seemed to get along quite well. You looked very familiar with each other.”
Amelia’s nerves tightened. Before she could fully unpack the implication, Vince smoothly changed his tone, adopting a concerned, almost paternal air.

“But as a colleague, I feel I should offer a friendly reminder.”
He lowered his voice slightly, as if giving sincere advice. “Our company, and Mr. Everett in particular, has always maintained a very clean reputation. There’s never been any questionable gossip around him. Your professional ability is something everyone recognizes. It’s better to stay focused on your work and not let your attention drift toward things that shouldn’t concern you.”
He paused there, and in the mirrored elevator wall, his scrutinizing gaze rested on Amelia without the slightest attempt to hide it.
