**TITLE: My Heart Waited Too Long and Choosing Freedom**
**Chapter 45: The Man Who Returned**
Amelia sat in a heavy silence, her hands balled into tight fists resting on her lap, each knuckle white with tension. Her mind was a whirlpool of thoughts, swirling around memories and emotions that felt both familiar and distant. Just then, a spark ignited in Lily’s eyes, pulling Amelia from her reverie. Leaning closer, Lily adopted a conspiratorial tone, her voice barely above a whisper, yet brimming with excitement.
“Amelia, I almost forgot to share some incredible news with you!” Lily’s enthusiasm was palpable, a bright contrast to the somber atmosphere. “Mason might be back in the country!”
A jolt of electricity raced through Amelia, her heart pounding so fiercely it felt as if it might burst. She froze, her gaze locked onto Lily, disbelief etched across her features. “How do you know?” she managed to ask, her voice trembling slightly.
“Our firm has a long-standing partnership with Mason’s company,” Lily explained, her words tumbling out in a rush. “This morning, we received an urgent cross-border merger agreement that needed signatures from all directors. But guess what? Mason’s signature was missing.”
Amelia’s breath hitched in her throat. The thought of Mason, the man who had once meant everything to her, being so close yet so far was overwhelming.
“You know how he is,” Lily continued, her tone shifting to one of exasperation. “He’s practically a ghost. He’s been abroad for years now, and whenever he signs something, it has to go through this convoluted international courier system. It usually takes three to five days for his signature to arrive.”
“But here’s the kicker,” she added, her eyes sparkling with intrigue. “The signed page appeared this afternoon, and the ink was still fresh. No fax, no scan. Everyone at the firm is buzzing with the idea that the legendary Mason Everett must have returned. Otherwise, it wouldn’t have come through so quickly.”
Amelia felt her fingers tighten around the blanket draped over her. Could it be true?
He really came back?
A tidal wave of emotions crashed over her—joy intertwined with a sharp pang of longing, blurring her vision with unshed tears.
Six years.
In her mind, she had convinced herself that whatever bond had once tethered them had long since unraveled. They had become mere shadows of their former selves, two people who could only recall each other’s names.
But now he was back.
Could it truly be that the man who had once pulled her from that dark, private room was Mason?
Yet, if it was indeed him, why hadn’t he reached out to her?
“Hey, do you want me to ask Mason for help?” Lily suggested cautiously, gauging Amelia’s reaction. “If he steps in, neither Ethan nor the Harlows would dare to touch you again.”
“No… it’s fine,” Amelia replied, her voice barely above a whisper.
The light in Amelia’s eyes dimmed, replaced by a faint, bitter smile that barely graced her lips.
“If we were still anything like we used to be, you wouldn’t have to tell me that. He would have come to me on his own,” she remarked, her tone laced with a deep-seated sorrow.
But he hadn’t.
