“Can’t you see how dark it is? And the road is rough. Amelia is a girl. What if she falls? Daddy Mason is holding her hand so she doesn’t trip. That’s him being a gentleman. Got it?”
The explanation smoothly covered Amelia’s embarrassment.
Amelia shot Nora a grateful look. She was about to follow along and let the moment pass, but she accidentally met Nora’s smiling eyes.
It’s fine. I understand how things are between young people.
Amelia’s heart jolted again.
She suddenly felt that Nora, who looked like she didn’t care about anything, actually saw everything clearly. She probably understood more than she let on.
Amelia’s face grew hotter. She lowered her head and pretended to focus on the food on her plate.
“Haha…”
Mason’s delightful chuckle came from beside her.
She secretly glanced at him. Mason looked calm and relaxed. He picked several pieces of glazed ribs from the plate and stacked them on Hayden’s small plate.
“Eat up, little detective. You see everything so clearly.”
Hayden bit into a rib. His cheeks puffed out. He mumbled like a little grown–up, “You’re bribing me with food so I’ll keep quiet.”
“Pfft!”
Even Evan, who was usually the most proper, couldn’t help laughing.
Dinner continued in a warm, cozy mood.
Zach told funny stories about country life. Nora shared some health tips she had learned recently. Evan spoke once in a while. Mason didn’t talk much, but he often used the serving fork to pick up food that Amelia couldn’t reach and placed it on her plate.
At first, Amelia felt a little stiff and nervous. But soon, she was pulled into the strong family atmosphere.
She slowly relaxed. She even smiled while answering Zach’s questions.
And she could feel that, although Mason didn’t talk much, most of his attention was on her.
After dinner, it was completely dark outside.
Amelia offered to help Nora clean up the dishes. Nora tried to refuse a few times, but Amelia insisted, an she let her help.
Chapter 463 Quiet Pain
In the bright kitchen lights, they washed dishes together. Nora chatted causally asking if work had been tiring.
When they finished and walked back out, the cheerful mood in the yard hard quietly changed
Zach glanced at the wall clock. His expression turned serious. He nodded to Kaia
Kaia understood. She pushed Evan’s wheelchair toward the therapy room in the backyard.
Mason and Hayden, who had been sitting at the table, also stood up.
After drying her hands, Amelia walked out and saw Mason and Hayden standing outside the rightly closed door, one tall and one shorter.
Nora walked over and stood beside them. Her smile vanished, giving way to worry
The door was closed tightly, but it wasn’t fully soundproof.
Soon, faint sounds began to filter through the cracks. Low, broken groans.
The sound wasn’t loud. It wasn’t like screaming in pain. It sounded more like someone biting down hard. trying to endure, but still unable to stop the pain from leaking out.
Just hearing it made Amelia feel like an invisible hand was tightening around her heart.
She looked at Nora beside her.
Nora’s eyes had turned red.
She stared at the door. Her hands twisted together in front of her. Her knuckles turned white from the
force.
The pain and helplessness of a mother almost overflowed from her thin frame.
Amelia’s chest tightened too.
She moved closer to Mason and asked softly, “Does Evan go through this kind of pain every time he gets therapy?”
She couldn’t imagine what kind of pain could cause someone as gentle as Evan to make sounds like that.
Before Mason could answer, Hayden, standing beside him, looked up.
He nodded gently and spoke in a small voice, “Yeah. Every time Dad comes out after the therapy, his face is super pale. His forehead is covered in sweat. But when we ask him, he always says it doesn’t hurt. He even smiles and says his legs feel stronger.”
Amelia’s nose stung.
In the darkness, Mason’s side profile looked hard and tense.
He stared at the dark fields in the distance. His eyes were full of emotions he was trying hard to hold bac
Chapter 411 Optet Pain
Feeling Amelia’s gaze, he looked back at her.
Then he raised his hand and gently patted her shoulder with his warm, stearly palm
“Amelia, come and take a stroll with me. Get some fresh air.*
“Okay” Amelia nodded firmly.
She turned and walked toward Nora, whose eyes were still red. She gently looped her arm through Nora’s. “Let’s go take a walk, okay? The moon is beautiful tonight. Evan is so strong. He’ll get better each time. Don’t worry too much.”
