Chapter 477 No Sugarcoating
This time, before Amelia could even react, Grace, Vivian, and Cass all went pale at once.
Almost instinctively, they scrambled to shove the checkbook and the agreement off the table and back into their bags.
Amelia watched their frantic movements with cold eyes, laughing bitterly to herself.
She straightened her expression, turned, and yanked the door open.
Standing on the other side, just as she expected, was Ethan.
His tall frame was silhouetted against the hallway light, and in his hands he held a plate of lava cake.
When he saw Amelia open the door, a flicker of awkwardness crossed his face. “Amelia, I noticed you barely touched dinner. I was worried you’d get hungry later, so I had the kitchen make you some lava cake.”
This belated, clumsy attempt at tenderness felt almost ironic given the circumstances.
Amelia’s gaze drifted slowly down to the plate in his hands.
“Just one plate?” she said softly, her voice lifting slightly at the end. “I’m afraid that won’t be enough.”
Ethan blinked, not catching her meaning.
The next second, Amelia stepped aside, revealing the full scene inside the room with nothing left to hide.
Under the bright lights, three Rowe elders sat stiffly in their seats, their expressions frozen, their eyes darting everywhere but forward, the awkwardness so thick you could choke on it.
The warmth on Ethan’s face froze over, replaced by a storm brewing just beneath the surface.
His voice went cold and sharp. “Mom, what are you all doing here this late, coming to see Amelia?”
“It’s … it’s nothing.” Grace forced herself to stay composed. “We just saw that Amelia was alone in her room and thought she might not be comfortable, so we came to keep her company and chat for a bit. What, I’m her elder–you really think I’d bully her?”
Even she didn’t sound convinced by her own excuse.
And there was no way in hell Ethan was buying that flimsy excuse.
His gaze lingered on Amelia’s icy expression for just a second, and that was all he needed to piece together most of the picture.
He didn’t press further. Instead, he pushed the plate of lava cake into Amelia’s hands, then stepped forward, his broad frame nearly blocking the entire doorway.
“It’s getting late. Amelia needs her rest.”
