Ethan stubbed out his cigarette and tossed it into a nearby trash can, then nodded toward a marble bench not far away. “Let’s sit over there.”
Amelia assumed he was going to use this as another excuse to cling to her, so from the moment she sat down, every muscle in her body was coiled tight with defensiveness.
The stone bench was cold. The night was still.
Ethan didn’t look at her. He just stared out at the blurred silhouette of the estate dissolving into the darkness, and after a long silence, he finally spoke, his voice heavy with reflection.
“I always knew that all of this–the family, the business–would be mine someday. I used to take it for granted. I even looked forward to it.” He gave a bitter, self–mocking tug at the corner of his mouth. “But now that the weight of it has actually landed on my shoulders, for the first time, I feel how heavy it really is.
“When Grandma was still here, she carried so much of it for me. At the very least, I never had to deal with the mess of managing all these relatives, or handle circus acts like Derek’s tonight. She was like an umbrella, shielding me from every storm, letting me charge forward without a care in the world.”
His voice was quiet, almost like he was talking to himself, or confiding in the one person who might actually understand.
Without realizing it, the tension in Amelia’s expression began to soften.
She could tell that what he was saying right now was genuine–not him putting on a show.
She went quiet for a moment before speaking softly. “Ethan, it really is time for you to grow up.”
Ethan turned to look at her, a question in his eyes.
Amelia continued evenly. “You were born into privilege, but honestly, you’ve been luckier than most. This road was smoother for you than it ever was for anyone else. Your grandfather paved the way. Your grandmother held up the sky. You’ve barely ever faced a real setback.
“I hope losing Fiona makes you truly understand that everything you say and do from now on doesn’t just represent you. It represents the entire Rowe family–its legacy and its future. You can’t afford to be reckless anymore.”
The old Ethan had taken the reins of the Rowe Group early and wore the title of CEO like a crown in everyone else’s eyes.
But to Amelia, there had always been something underneath that polished surface—a stubborn streak of boyish naivety that he could never quite shake.
Put simply, part of him had never fully left the playground.
He always believed things could be easily controlled, that people would always be standing in the same spot, waiting for him whenever he decided to look up.

A flash of pain crossed Ethan’s eyes. He let out a hollow, self–deprecating laugh, his voice growing even more bitter. “So that’s the price of growing up, huh? Losing you. Losing you for good.”
Amelia shook her head in disagreement, though something inside her had finally, fully settled into calm.
“Think of it this way. Two people who were never right for each other can walk the same road for a while, but sooner or later, they’re going to reach a fork and go their separate ways.
“The truth is, I’m not that different from you.” She paused. “I’m not nearly as strong and independent as everyone seems to think. I need security, too. I need to know that when I’m being attacked or pushed around, someone will step up for me without hesitation–even if it’s just a single word.
“But in all the years of our marriage, you never once gave me that.”
Ethan stared at her calm, unmoved profile–at those eyes that would never ripple for him.
His throat bobbed with effort, as if it took everything he had to force the words past his lips.
“Amelia … what if I change? What if I’m different from now on? Is it … is it too late?”
The night breeze drifted through, rustling the leaves on the wisteria arbor with a soft, whispering sound.
Ethan’s question dissolved into the cool air and faded away.
Was it too late?
