Chapter 492 Every Flavor You Like
“I’m tired.” Amelia turned her face away from Ethan, giving all her attention to Mason beside her, exhaustion heavy in every word. “Mason, let’s go home.”
Mason nodded, took her hand, and walked right past Ethan toward his own car.
Ethan slumped against his vehicle as if every last ounce of strength had been drained from his body.
The afternoon sun was warm and bright, but where it touched him, all he felt was cold, dead stillness.
As if the world itself were quietly telling him that he had lost. Completely and utterly.
Back in the familiar comfort of home, Mason told her to sit on the couch and rest while he disappeared for a moment, returning with several elegant cake boxes in hand.
Amelia stared at the spread that took up nearly half the coffee table, her eyes widening.
Strawberry mousse, tiramisu, crepe cake, Oreo…
“You…” Amelia was torn between laughter and exasperation. “There’s no way I can eat all of this. Why did you buy so many?”
Mason was already unwrapping one of the boxes, answering casually. “I was only going to get your favorite, but the girl at the counter kept recommending these, saying they’re all new flavors and really popular right now. I figured, why not, so I just grabbed them all. Let you try something different.”
He said it like it was nothing, but Amelia stared at him for a long moment before a genuine laugh bubbled out of her.
She picked up a small fork, pointed it at him, her eyes glinting with teasing mischief. “Mason, you absolutely got played. They saw you coming a mile away.”
Mason gave a helpless laugh, but underneath it, his eyes were pure, unfiltered adoration.
As long as she was smiling, he didn’t care if he’d been played. He would’ve bought the entire bakery without thinking twice.
Amelia opened the crepe cake first–a yellow base topped with a single plump strawberry so red it looked like candy. It was almost too pretty to eat.
She scooped up a small bite and let it melt on her tongue, the delicate cream blending with the faint vanilla in a slow, sweet dissolve.
She ate a few quiet bites, and the air between them settled into silence again.
A stillness neither of them quite knew how to fill.
Mason sat beside her, watching her take one careful bite after another–the slight tremble of her lashes, the faint blush returning to her pale cheeks.

Then, softly, from behind her, he murmured her name. “Amelia.”
Her hand froze mid–bite. Before she could turn around, she felt the couch dip slightly behind her.
Mason had slid off the couch and settled onto the wool rug behind her.
Then his arms reached around from behind and wrapped firmly around her waist.
The position was impossibly intimate.
Mason had always been restrained and private with his emotions. Moments like this, where he let his guard down, where something almost vulnerable broke through the surface, were rare.
Amelia’s fork hovered in midair. She could feel it–the tension locked in every muscle of the man holding
her.
She set the fork down and laid her hand gently over his, where it rested against her waist. “Mason, what’s wrong?” she asked softly. “I’m the one who got scared today. Shouldn’t I be the one doing the clinging?”
Her voice was feather–light, meant to soothe, meant to make him let go of whatever was coiled so tight inside him.
A soft laugh came from behind her.
“Nothing.” He rested his chin gently in the curve of her shoulder. “I’m just trying to figure out … what it would take to keep you by my side every single second of every single day.”
He said it so softly. So slowly.
Amelia’s heart gave a sharp, sudden lurch.
She understood. He was spiraling, caught between having her here and the terror of almost losing her.
What happened today hadn’t just shaken her. It had shaken him.
And for him, the fear of what could have been and the fear of losing her without even knowing it were a torment far worse than facing the danger herself.
This man who had always been her rock, who held up the sky for her without breaking a sweat, was quietly, in his own way, letting her see how afraid he was.
Amelia turned in his arms, determined to face him, intent on comforting him properly.
But before a single word could leave her lips, his mouth found hers.
Mason’s kiss fell without warning.
