She put on a simple black velvet dress, did some light makeup, and showed up at the ballroom on time.

Amelia glanced around the room. It didn’t take long for her to spot Elliot at the main table.

But when she saw Ethan sitting next to Elliot, her steps paused for a split second.

Then she suddenly remembered–Rowe Group was the biggest sponsor of this competition.

No wonder Hannah was so sure she’d win. She must have thought that with Ethan backing the event, getting first place was basically guaranteed.

Amelia looked away and purposely chose a seat as far from the main table as possible. She just wanted to quietly get through the party.

Not long after the party started, a female judge named Vivi Sterling walked over with a glass of wine. She ooked curious and leaned closer as she asked in a low voice, “I heard that you and Mr. Rowe… used to be narried. Is that true?”

Amelia had long made peace with that part of her past.

She nodded calmly. “Yes, but we’re divorced now. And I already have a new boyfriend.”

“What?” Vivi gasped. “Oh my gosh! What kind of man is better than Mr. Rowe? He’s the most famous bachelor in Eldoria right now! So many rich socialites are dying to marry him.”

Amelia heard that and smiled, a genuine smile.

“Yeah,” she said softly. “But my boyfriend is better than him.”

She wasn’t saying it out of spite or to show off. She truly meant it.

If she mentioned Mason’s name, Vivi would definitely understand what she meant. But she didn’t want to make such a big deal out of it.

Vivi clearly didn’t believe her. She shook her head and sighed. “What a waste. If I could inarry a man like

that, I wouldn’t care if he was a block of ice that never melts.”

Just as she finished speaking, the phone in her bag vibrated.

She checked to see who was calling. It was Mason.

“Sorry, I need to take this,” she told Vivi with a polite smile before heading out.

Amelia walked outside to a quiet corner of the balcony.

She swiped to answer, her voice automatically getting softer. “What’s up?”

Mason’s low voice came through the phone. “Why aren’t you home yet? It’s already late.”

Amelia was surprised. “I thought you were over at Evan’s place. Are you back today?”

‘Yeah,” Mason replied. “I just got back. I’ll stay here for a few days before going back again. Mr. Preston said Evan can start the second stage of treatment soon, but he needs to rest for a while first.”

The night breeze on the balcony was cool. Amelia leaned against the cold railing and listened to Mason’s Familiar voice. The smile on her lips grew a little wider.

“Tonight is the celebration party for the design competition,” she said softly. “I’m here because I was a udge, but it shouldn’t take much longer. I’ll be home as soon as it’s over.”

‘Then I’ll come pick you up.”

Amelia felt a warm feeling in her chest, but she still refused out of habit. “No, it’s okay. You just got back from seeing Evan. You must be exhausted. Get some sleep. I can-”

‘Amelia.” Mason cut her off, his tone turning more serious. “How long has it been since the last incident? And you’re already letting your guard down?”

He was talking about the attempted kidnapping not long ago.

Amelia went quiet.

She knew that incident still haunted him, and honestly, it still scared her too.

She couldn’t argue with his concern.

She bit her lip and tried to compromise, using a playful, sweet tone. “How about this? Don’t come yourself. Just send your driver to pick me up, okay? I know him, so nothing bad will happen.”

There was a short silence on the other end of the phone, as if he was thinking it over.

Finally, Mason gave a low “Mm–hmm” and agreed. “Fine.”

After hanging up, the soft and sweet feeling in Amelia’s heart lingered.

As soon as she returned to her seat, Vivi leaned in again, looking super jealous. “Ms. Harlow, you were smiling so sweetly just now. You and your boyfriend must have a really good relationship, right?”
