**Chapter 53: Sabotage**
“Excuse me, I have an urgent call to take.” Edison announced, rising from her chair with a sense of urgency that echoed in her voice. She glanced at the three of them gathered around the table, a flicker of impatience crossing her features. “Please, just give me five minutes.”
As she departed, she turned to her assistant, a young woman with wide eyes and an eager demeanor. “Could you please serve our guests some coffee?” Edison instructed, her tone brisk.
Moments later, the assistant returned, balancing three disposable cups with a careful hand. She offered one to Peter, then handed another to Amelia, and finally approached Hannah, who was seated with a mixture of anticipation and anxiety.
As the assistant extended the cup towards Hannah, a sudden movement caught her off guard. Hannah, reaching out instinctively to accept the coffee, inadvertently nudged the assistant’s wrist.
“Ah!” The assistant gasped, startled.
In a split second, the cup was sent tumbling through the air, its contents—a scalding stream of coffee—arcing downward. It landed with a splat on the edge of the desk, directly on the USB drive that Amelia had precariously placed there moments before.
Amelia’s heart raced as she watched in horror, her eyes widening in disbelief. The hot liquid seeped into the USB’s casing, and she felt several drops splatter against the back of her hand, the heat stinging her skin like a sharp reprimand.
“What are you doing?” Amelia’s voice rang out, laced with panic as she scrambled to gather tissues, wrapping them around the drenched USB drive. Her mind raced with thoughts of the precious files contained within, the culmination of weeks of hard work.
Hannah’s face fell, her expression morphing into one of sheer terror. “I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to! The assistant… she wasn’t careful…” Her voice trembled, the weight of guilt crashing down on her.
The assistant, now pale as a ghost, stammered, “I’m really sorry! It was my fault!” Her eyes darted between the others, clearly distressed by the chaos unfolding.
Peter, oblivious to the details of the mishap, only saw the ruined USB drive. His frustration reached a boiling point as he snapped at Amelia, urgency lacing his tone. “Why are you just standing there? Check the USB! That contains everything we need!”
Just then, the door swung open, and Edison re-entered the room, her demeanor shifting from focused to alarmed at the sight before her. “What happened here?” she demanded, her brows knitting together in irritation. Without waiting for a full explanation, she settled back into her chair, her impatience palpable. “Can we start the presentation now?”
Amelia inhaled deeply, trying to steady her racing heart. She wiped the USB drive as best as she could, praying that it would still function, and plugged it into the computer. The cursor spun and spun, a mocking dance of uncertainty, before a cold message appeared on the screen: “USB device not recognized.”
A knot formed in Amelia’s stomach, dread pooling within her. She attempted to reconnect the USB, her fingers trembling with anxiety. Again and again, she tried, but each time the result was the same.
