**TITLE: My Heart Waited Too Long and Choosing Freedom**
**Chapter 55: The Break**
Amelia had always prided herself on her steadiness and precision. She was the kind of designer who meticulously planned every detail, ensuring that nothing ever went awry. So, when an error occurred today, it struck Ethan as particularly egregious.
He exhaled sharply, feeling the tension coil tightly in his chest. Clenching his fists, he demanded, “Then explain it to me. How could a professional designer make such a ludicrous blunder? How could you allow the USB to get soaked and ruined just moments before a crucial client meeting?!”
Amelia’s patience snapped. “Why don’t you ask your precious Hannah?” she shot back, her voice slicing through the air like a shard of glass. “Why couldn’t she manage to hold a simple cup of coffee? And why did it have to spill at that exact moment, in the exact direction of my USB?”
Ethan’s instinct kicked in, and he began to defend Hannah. “Hannah wouldn’t…” he started, but the words felt hollow even as he spoke them. “She would never do something like that!”
Of course, he thought to himself, no matter the circumstances or the evidence laid before him, if Hannah was involved, he would always stand by her without a second thought.
“Really?” Amelia’s eyes flashed with indignation, the redness creeping into her cheeks a stark contrast to her usual calm demeanor. “She would never? Then why don’t you check the hallway camera outside Edison’s office? Let’s see if this was truly my mistake or if it was just a poorly timed act from someone else.”
“And another thing,” she pressed on, her voice unwavering and fierce. “Mr. Zane insisted that Hannah accompany us today. Now, the entire project is in jeopardy, but instead of holding her accountable, you’re heaping all the blame on me.”
“Ethan, if Rowe Group wants to shield her or impress her, that’s your prerogative. But don’t you dare use me as your scapegoat.”
Amelia rarely lost her composure. She was known for her grace under pressure, her ability to endure hardship in silence. But now, seeing her eyes glisten with unshed tears and her voice quiver with barely contained fury struck a chord deep within Ethan.
His anger began to wane.
“I’m sorry… I spoke too harshly,” he mumbled, averting his gaze, the weight of his words heavy in the air. “I’ll look into what really happened.”
Amelia let out a humorless laugh, tinged with bitterness.
“Investigate or not, what difference does it make to me?” she replied, her voice steadying as she took a step back, creating a chasm between them.
“I’m just an external designer,” she stated, her tone calm once more. “And starting today, I, Amelia, will no longer be affiliated with Rowe Group.”
She lifted her gaze, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears as she sought Ethan’s approval. “She wasn’t very receptive at first, but I persisted, promising that we would deliver our best work. In the end, she agreed to continue the collaboration.”
Ethan’s mind raced as he imagined it: Hannah, standing alone, facing the formidable Edison. The harsh words, the pressure, the humiliation she must have endured. Compared to that, Amelia had made a mistake, argued with him, and refused to submit.
One was careless and defiant, the other quietly enduring the storm to rectify the situation. The comparison was stark, and the conclusion was unavoidable.
“Did they treat you poorly?” Ethan’s voice softened, his concern spilling over as he instinctively grasped Hannah’s hand, worry etched across his features.
Hannah shook her head gently, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. “It’s alright, Ethan. Just some harsh words. For the sake of the company, I can handle it.”
Ethan’s grip tightened around her hand, gratitude swelling within him.
Meanwhile, Amelia stood silently, watching the unfolding drama, a spectator to their performance.
