Chapter 604 No One is Irreplaceable
Tim heard her out, then leaned back in his chair, thinking.

After a few seconds, he shook his head and turned her suggestion down, his expression serious. “That won’t work. Amelia, you have to understand how important this is. This company may not be a household name here, but they have very close ties with several top–tier fashion groups in Eropal.
“For us, this project isn’t just another order. It’s a foot in the door. If this partnership goes well, our business will finally start reaching the overseas market. Strategically, for the company as a whole, this would be a
milestone.
“For something this important, sending someone else looks like we don’t take it seriously enough, and it leaves too much room for the brief to get mistranslated along the way. They asked us for a surprise. The only way we can really read them is if you, the lead designer, go in person.”
Tim saw the hesitation still lingering on her face and softened, the corner of his mouth tilting into a knowing smile. “What, is Mason worried about you going that far by yourself?”
“No,” Amelia said quickly. “I haven’t even told him about it yet.”
She knew her earlier proposal was unprofessional, possibly even a little selfish.
In a company that was actually on the rise, no one was indispensable. If she brushed off this opportunity for personal reasons, the company could just hand it to someone else.
She took a deep breath, as if making up her mind about something, and finally relented. “…All right, Mr. Clem. I’ll do what I can to arrange my schedule.”
Tim broke into a smile when she gave in. Knowing he was asking a lot of her, he added reassuringly, “Don’t worry, I’m not sending you out there alone. Let me look at my schedule and see if I can clear the time to go with you. It’s actually a lucky coincidence–Mason and I both studied over there back in the day, so we know the city well enough. I can at least help keep an eye on things.”
At that, half of the weight in Amelia’s chest lifted.
With Tim along, at least the professional side of the trip would be in steady hands.
“Thank you, Mr. Clem.”
Near the end of the workday, as Amelia was packing up her things, Mason called.
“Amelia, I’m sorry. Something came up here–an emergency meeting. I can’t come pick you up tonight.”
“It’s okay. Focus on work.” Amelia’s voice was gentle.
Mason hesitated for a second before saying, with unmistakable concern, “If you don’t want to deal with Grandma… go take yourself out. Walk around, eat something you like, and come back later.”
He was always like this, always finding ways to shield her from the ugly parts.
Something warm moved through her chest. But she looked out the window at the darkening evening, phone in hand, and gave a small shake of her head. “It’s all right. I’ll go back.”

Chapter 604 No One is Irreplaceable
She knew you could dodge for a day, but you couldn’t dodge forever.
Wilda was a mountain she was going to have to climb. Avoiding her wouldn’t solve anything.

If she had decided she was going to build a life with Mason, then sooner or later she was going to have to learn how to face all of this on her own.
She hung up, didn’t linger, walked out of the building right on time, and caught a cab home.
When the car pulled up into the familiar courtyard, Amelia paid the fare and got out. She looked up at the brightly lit villa, took a deep breath, and walked inside.
The living room was empty. The only sound was the TV, blaring some loud financial news channel at no
one.
She was about to head upstairs when her footsteps came to a sudden halt.
Soft voices were drifting down from the second–floor hallway.
A moment later, the last two people in the world she wanted to see came into view at the top of the stairs.
Phoebe was carefully supporting Wilda as they walked–and the direction they were coming from was, unmistakably, Amelia’s room.
The moment they spotted Amelia standing in the entryway below, both of their faces shifted. Something unnatural flickered across both their faces.
Phoebe especially. A flash of guilt and panic shot through her eyes before she pasted on a stiff, mask–like smile and attempted to look composed.
Wilda turned her head away with her usual haughty air, but her uneven breathing gave her away. She clearly hadn’t just been out for a walk.
Amelia’s heart sank. Something was wrong. She could feel it.
She didn’t acknowledge either of them. Face blank, she walked past them, went straight to her own room, and pushed the door open.
At first glance, everything in the room looked the same as it had been when she left that morning. Then her eyes locked onto the floor–and the wreckage scattered across it.
