“I’ve always heard that businessmen from your place tend to be quite reserved,” Howard said, glancing between Mason and Amelia with warm, teasing eyes. “But here you are, Mr. Clem, young and already married. And to our very talented Ms. Harlow, no less. What a pair.”
The wine Amelia had just sipped nearly came back up. She managed to swallow it, barely, and broke into a coughing fit that turned her face a deep, helpless red.
Tim was married, yes. But his wife was back home, and Amelia was absolutely not her. This was a disaster. She shot a desperate look at Mason, silently begging him to clear it up.
And yet the one responsible for all of it sat there perfectly composed, utterly unbothered, as if none of this were any concern of his at all.
“Yes,” he said, his voice easy and unhurried. “Marrying her was the best thing that ever happened to me.”
Amelia felt her heartbeat stutter.
She couldn’t correct him, not here, not in front of everyone. So she sat there while Mason played the devoted husband without a single crack in his composure.
“What a perfect match!” Howard said, with obvious sincerity. Then he laughed. “I was actually thinking, if Mr. Clem were single, I’d have to introduce him to my niece. You’ve already met her, actually.”
Caught off guard by the sudden turn, Amelia looked up with curiosity. “Your niece is?”
“Amy.” He grinned and waved her over from across the room. “Grew up right here in Farolia, but she has a deep love for Cindaran culture. Always has.”
Amy came over, and Howard clapped a hand on her shoulder with the ease of someone who knew exactly how to embarrass a family member.
“Mr. Clem,” he said, in a mock–conspiratorial tone, “any chance you have a friend? Single, accomplished, perhaps of Cindaran heritage? Our Amy has a type.”
Amy went pink. She gave Howard a sharp, reproachful nudge and muttered something under her breath, but her eyes, just briefly, drifted toward Mason with a look she didn’t quite manage to hide.
Mason kept his hand on Amelia’s and answered with polite distance. “I’m sorry, Mr. Burns. No one comes to
out.” mind at the moment, but I’ll keep an eye
Howard waved it off, unbothered. Then something seemed to occur to him, and curiosity lit up his face.
“Speaking of which, when I was doing my background research, I came across something interesting. The man behind Stardale, Mr. Mason Everett, is apparently still single?”
The table went quiet. Or at least it did for Amelia and Mason, both of them caught completely off guard. Amelia’s heart climbed straight into her throat. What was he going to say?
She hated herself a little for how badly she wanted to know.
“No, actually,” Mason’s voice remained steady, his expression easy and polite as he met Howard’s curious gaze.

“From what I know, Mr. Everett has been in a relationship for some time now. They’re quite serious.”
Perfectly handled. Enough to shut down the line of inquiry, not enough to give anything away.
Howard’s face fell in theatrical disappointment. He spread his hands in a very Farolian gesture of resignation. “What a shame. I had such hopes for my niece.”
Beside him, Amy had gone fully red. She shoved Howard’s arm and hissed at him in Farolian, loud enough for those nearby to catch. “Uncle, stop making me sound like I’m doomed to be single. It’s embarrassing.”
