Chapter 636 She’s Gone

Mason’s expression shifted, just slightly. He reached over and ran his hand over her hair, steady and

unhurried.

“Don’t overthink it. Could just be a coincidence.”

The calm in his voice did what it always did. The unease in her chest loosened a little. She nodded and let it go.

But when Amelia turned to look out the window, Mason’s gaze moved quietly in the direction the car had gone. Something moved behind his eyes, brief and deliberate, before his face settled back to neutral.

He never took chances with anything that could threaten her. This was worth looking into.

The car door opened and Moonlight Avenue came rushing in, noise and light and the particular energy of a street that knows exactly what it is. The flagship stores of every major luxury house lined the boulevard alongside smaller designer boutiques and art galleries, the kind of places that rewarded close attention.

It was exactly Amelia’s world, and it showed. The mood from earlier fell away almost immediately. She tucked her hand into his arm and pulled him into the flow of the crowd, her eyes going bright the moment she had something worth looking at.

Mason went wherever she led him. He watched her stop in front of window after window, heard her talk through what she was seeing, the design choices, the structural details, the way light hit a particular surface, and felt something in his chest that he made no particular effort to examine.

At an art supply shop she pulled him inside and came out with a small sketchbook and a stick of charcoal.

After that, whenever something caught her attention, a cornice, a shadow, the way an archway framed the street behind it, she’d find a bench and get a few lines down before moving on. He stood beside her each time, blocking the foot traffic without being asked.

By the time the sun was going down and the avenue was gilded in the last of the light, they had shopping bags and a sketchbook that was already a quarter full, and they found a table at an open-air café

corner.

Most of the bags were things Mason had insisted on. Amelia sat and went through the sketchbook with the quiet satisfaction of someone who’d spent the day exactly right.

It was fully dark by the time they got back to the hotel.

Amelia went to shower. Mason made a call.

It was answered immediately.

“Sir”

“Look into Hannah’s whereabouts. I need to know if she’s still in Porteria.”

“Right away, sir.”

He set the phone down. His face gave nothing away, the same composed stillness it always wore. He didn’t

like loose ends, and he didn’t tolerate anything that might put Arnelia at risk. Even if this afternoon turned out to be nothing, he needed to be certain.

Amelia came out of the bathroom a little while later in her robe, crossed to where he was standing, and looked out at the city below.

“The view at night here is something else,” she said.

He took the towel from her hands without a word, settled her onto the couch, and stood behind her, working the moisture out of her hair with slow, careful strokes.

She closed her eyes and let him. The room was quiet, just the low hum of the hair dryer and the faint scent of her shampoo in the air.

The quiet didn’t last. Amelia’s phone broke it, ringing sharp and sudden. She picked it up and glanced at the screen. It was Ethan.

Something cold moved through her before she could name it. She hit the speaker without thinking. Mason went still behind her, his eyes dropping to the phone.

“Hello? What’s wrong?”
