**Chapter 66: The Landlord’s Secret**
Amelia stood there, her mind racing with uncertainty as she tried to process the scene unfolding before her. Despite her best efforts, she couldn’t shake the nagging feeling of suspicion that had taken root in her thoughts.
“Hey, stop daydreaming! We need to head upstairs,” Lily’s voice cut through the haze of her contemplation, snapping Amelia back to reality.

Amelia inhaled deeply, attempting to quell the tempest of doubts swirling within her. Today was crucial; the contract was paramount, and nothing else mattered.
As they entered the building, the atmosphere felt charged with anticipation. After a brief exchange at the reception desk, a sharply dressed young man emerged from the elevator, his demeanor exuding professionalism. “Ms. Rayne, Ms. Harlow, good afternoon. I represent Stardale. If you would kindly follow me,” he said, his polite smile reassuring yet formal.
They stepped into a private elevator that whisked them directly to the top floor. The ascent felt surreal, each passing floor heightening Amelia’s anxiety.
The elevator came to a halt, and they arrived at the door of the CEO’s office. The assistant turned, his expression apologetic. “I must apologize, Ms. Rayne. The CEO has specifically requested to speak with Ms. Harlow alone first.”
Amelia could see the smile on Lily’s face freeze, her eyes widening in disbelief.
A knot tightened in Amelia’s chest, and her palms began to sweat.
“It’s alright,” she said, her voice steadying as she shot Lily a reassuring glance.
They had come too far to back out now.
Lily’s frown deepened, concern etched across her features.
She leaned in closer, lowering her voice to a whisper. “Amelia, please be cautious. Remember, no matter what they propose, don’t agree to anything right away. Wait for me to review the contract first. If anything feels off, find a way to excuse yourself and come back out.”
“I understand,” Amelia replied, her eyes shining with determination. “Lily, I promise you, I can handle this.”
Lily offered a supportive pat on Amelia’s shoulder. “Alright then. I’ll be right here waiting for you. Have faith in yourself. You’ve got this.”
With a final deep breath, Amelia steadied herself, adjusting her expression to mask her nerves, and turned to face the imposing closed door.
Pushing it open felt like stepping into the unknown, her heart racing as if it might leap from her chest.
She had rehearsed for this moment, preparing herself for any stranger that might sit behind that desk, running through countless opening lines in her mind, but nothing could have prepared her for what lay beyond.
To her astonishment, the figure seated in the office was none other than her landlord, Brad—the very man she had encountered just the day before.
Time seemed to freeze as Amelia processed this shocking revelation.
“Mr. Whitmore? What are you doing here?” she stammered, her voice barely above a whisper, disbelief etched across her features.
Her gaze darted around the spacious office, searching for any sign of another presence, but the room was empty, amplifying her confusion.
“Are you… the CEO of Stardale Group?” she asked hesitantly, her heart pounding.
A chill ran down Amelia’s spine.
They had even conducted an investigation into her personal life?
Of course, they would. For a corporation as substantial as Stardale, thorough background checks were standard practice in the pursuit of significant partnerships.
She felt naive for not anticipating this.
Her complexion paled, and the weight of the situation pressed down on her like a heavy shroud.
What could she possibly say in response?
Should she reveal that she and Ethan were in the midst of a divorce, and that this money was intended to secure the Harlows’ freedom?
Or that her bank account was embarrassingly low, even less than their nanny’s?
But before the divorce was finalized, she couldn’t bear the thought of another person learning about the humiliation she had endured with Ethan. That was the last vestige of dignity she clung to.
With her head bowed, Amelia took a moment to gather her thoughts. Finally, she spoke softly, “Mr. Whitmore, I regret to inform you that I cannot disclose the specific reasons behind my request. This money… I need it urgently for some very personal matters.”
She met his scrutinizing gaze with determination. “However, I assure you that once we finalize the contract, I will stake my reputation on the quality of every design I present. I will create value for Stardale that far exceeds this investment.”
