Chapter 670 Some Futures Never Return
He had long since learned how to bury every calculation, every strain, beneath a surface that never so much as rippled.
Their first stop was the hospital to visit Evan and Nora.
When they pushed open the door to the VIP ward, Evan lay on the bed as he always did, still and silent, as if he had merely slipped into a deep sleep, ready to wake at any moment.
Beside him, his mother, Nora, sat with her back slightly curved from exhaustion. She held a warm, damp cloth and was wiping her son’s arm with slow, careful motions.
At the sound of the door, she turned. The moment her eyes landed on Mason and Amelia standing side by side, the worry in them deepened, threads of red webbing through the whites.
“You…” She hesitated, the question catching in her throat before softening into something quieter. “Are you two alright?”
Mason stepped forward and took the cloth from her hand, his voice low and steady. “Let me.”
He bent down and continued what she had been doing. Those hands that had overturned boardrooms and bent markets to his will now moved with immense patience, wiping Evan’s arm as if tenderness alone could wake him.
Amelia went to Nora’s side and gently took her arm. “We’re fine. Don’t worry.”
She saw the exhaustion carved into Nora’s face, and her chest tightened. “You’ve been here all night. Maybe go home and rest for a while?”
Nora shook her head, her gaze drifting back to Evan’s face with quiet stubbornness. “I’m alright. As long as I’m here with him, I can breathe a little easier.” After a pause, she added, “Besides, Kaia’s with Hayden. She’s taking good care of him. There’s nothing waiting for me back home anyway.”
At the mention of Kaia and her grandson, some of the tightness in her expression eased.
Amelia let her eyes wander across the room and soon noticed a delicate basket of lilies on the bedside table.
The blooms were fresh, still holding beads of moisture. They hadn’t been there long.
“Did someone come to see him?” she asked.
Nora nodded. “Kaia came by this morning. She dropped Hayden off at school and stopped here on the way.”
She sighed, the sound heavy with feeling. “The moment she saw Evan like this, she just… broke. Tears wouldn’t stop coming. I felt awful watching her. And yet, after crying for so long, she held my hand and kept reassuring me-said he would wake up, told me to take care of myself.”
Another sigh followed, deeper this time, threaded with regret. “She’s a good girl. Truly. It’s just a shame that Evan wasn’t meant to have that kind of luck.”

Chapter 670 Some Futures Never Return
Finished
Amelia looked involuntarily toward the bed.
There had once been warmth in him, a quiet steadiness that made people feel safe just standing nearby. Now, all of it lay suspended in stillness.
A wave of sorrow passed through her, for him, and for Kaia.
The doctors had given up hope that Evan would ever walk again. The unspoken truth hung in the air like a held breath: whatever future he and Kaia might have had was gone.
The room grew heavier under the weight of that thought.
They stayed with Nora for a long while, until the afternoon light softened and shifted. Only then did they quietly take their leave.
The car didn’t head home. Instead, it turned toward a lakeside park not far from the hospital.
It was a weekday, and the park was nearly empty. A few elderly couples strolled at an easy pace, while young mothers watched over children chasing each other across the grass. The spring breeze skimmed across the lake, stirring faint ripples that caught the light. Everything felt calm. Untroubled.
Amelia, however, couldn’t seem to settle.
She had kept her mask on the entire time, almost without thinking, as though hiding behind it might keep trouble at bay. The last thing she wanted was to be recognized and cause Mason unnecessary complications.
