After she hung up, something about it kept bothering her, though she couldn’t quite explain why. She turned it over for a moment and decided to mention it to Tim.

When she relayed Lenny’s suggestion, Tim’s brow pulled together before he even realized it.

“The way you describe it, it sounds less like he wants to discuss the fashion show and more like he wants to take you to see where his late wife used to live.”

Tim sat with that thought, and then he remembered that Amelia had mentioned offhandedly that Lenny had told her she resembled his deceased wife.

An expression of mixed feelings moved across his face, and his tone took on a note of wry, cautious speculation. “He’s not… interested in you, is he? Like, thinking you look like her and wanting to run some kind of replacement situation?”

Amelia felt a visceral wave of discomfort at the idea.

She shook her head immediately. “That’s not possible. If he was actually attracted to someone else while playing up the grieving widower act in front of me, that would make him one of the most contemptible people alive. When I’ve spent time with him, he’s been a little odd in places, I’ll admit that, but he’s never done anything that actually made me uncomfortable.”

Tim exhaled and offered a reassuring smile. “Glad to hear that, if it’s true. Though as it happens, Mason hasn’t had much on his plate lately. You could just bring him along the whole time. That would put everyone’s mind at ease, including mine.”

The office door opened before he’d finished the sentence.

Mason’s tall, composed figure appeared in the doorway, the light behind him casting his features into sharp relief.

He was dressed casually, no tailored suit, but the unhurried elegance that defined him was entirely intact regardless of what he wore.

He raised one eyebrow slightly and looked at Tim, his voice perfectly even. “Tim, that almost sounded like you were implying I’ve been sitting around with nothing to do.”

Tim looked up, blinked in surprise, and then immediately rearranged his expression into his most cooperative smile. He waved his hands back and forth with exaggerated protest.

“Come on, don’t do that to me, man.” He stood and walked toward Mason, giving him a friendly nudge. “You’re still the big boss of Stardale. Whenever you want to come back, the door’s always open. We’re always ready for you.”

Amelia looked at Mason with genuine surprise. “What are you doing here? Didn’t you need to be with Evan?”

Mason’s movement paused for just a fraction of a second, and something complicated moved through his expression.

He settled onto the couch beside Amelia and explained without much inflection. “Kaia came by She said she could help with his care.”

Amelia’s brow furrowed slightly at that.

Mason had already had little Hayden brought back to stay with them a few days ago.

Nora was still handling Hayden’s school drop-offs and pickups every day, which meant Kaia hadn’t needed to be involved in Evan’s care at all for the time being.

And yet she had apparently followed them to Eldoria.

“But wasn’t she planning to take that teaching position in Harborville after all this?”

Mason let out a quiet breath, as though Kaia’s decision puzzled him somewhat too. I’m not entirely sure myself. My guess is she feels responsible. His leg still hasn’t healed, and now this happened on top of it. She probably wants to do something.”

Amelia left it there.

Kaia most likely wanted to spend whatever time she had left with Evan before the move to Harborville made it no longer possible.

Mason checked his watch and noted the time.

He turned toward Amelia, his voice easy and warm. “Tim and I have a meeting to get through. Wait in the office after you’re done for the day and we’ll head home together.”

Amelia nodded with a small, quiet smile that came up without her planning it. “Okay.”

Whatever happened next, having him nearby made her feel calmer.

Mason stood and walked with Tim toward the conference room.

Amelia steadied herself and headed back to her own office.

She gathered the core members of her department not long after and ran through a focused short meeting, distributing the workload for the upcoming week with careful detail.
