**Chapter 71: The Phone Call**
Amelia guided Mason into the living room, her heart pounding with a mix of anxiety and determination.
As she placed the takeout containers on the coffee table, she turned to face him, summoning every ounce of courage she could muster.
“Mr. Everett,” she began, her voice steady despite the turmoil inside her. “You’re visiting so late at night. Is there something you need?”
Mason stood in the middle of the room, his imposing figure casting a long shadow that seemed to engulf the already confined space. The air was thick with tension, making it hard for Amelia to breathe.
Without any preamble, he cut straight to the chase. “Accept the Stardale partnership.”
A wave of despair washed over Amelia, sinking deep into her chest. So, this was the reason for his late-night visit.
“If you’re worried about our interactions after we start working together,” Mason continued, his tone icy and unyielding, “I can easily delegate the entire project to the deputy CEO. I assure you, I won’t set foot in the company while we’re partnered.”
Amelia felt frozen in place, her mind racing. Was he really willing to go to such lengths just to persuade her to accept this offer?
She turned away, her feet moving on autopilot as she approached the water dispenser. Pouring a glass of warm water, she felt the heat of the moment rushing through her veins.
Setting the glass down on the coffee table before him, she lifted her chin defiantly. “I’m sorry, but I still can’t accept it.”
Her voice wavered slightly, but she pressed on, her resolve hardening. “Also, regarding this house, I had no idea it belonged to you. Once I find a new place, I’ll move out as soon as…”
“Amelia,” Mason interrupted, his voice cutting through her words like a knife.
“If you’re so determined to maintain a distance between us,” he took a step closer, a flicker of mockery dancing in his eyes, “why did you go through all the trouble of exposing Brad and insisting on meeting me?”
The air felt thick and suffocating as Amelia’s breath hitched in her throat.
He had struck a nerve, piercing through the layers of self-deception she had wrapped around herself.
“If you truly wanted to sever all ties with me, you should have kept up the facade and allowed Brad to be the sole decision-maker. You could have signed the contract without a hitch, secured the funding you so desperately need, and resolved all your issues.”
His voice, though not raised, was sharp and unforgiving. “Instead, you’re doing this—dragging the one behind the scenes into the light, only to act all high and mighty by rejecting it. What exactly are you trying to achieve?”
Amelia felt her defenses crumble under the weight of his words.
She recognized the contradictions in her actions, the tangled web of hope and fear she had spun for herself. Perhaps a part of her had clung to the faintest glimmer of hope, daring to uncover the truth, piece by piece.
But now, confronted with his coldness once more, she felt an overwhelming urge to flee.
Her cheeks flushed with embarrassment, and she bit down on her lip, the imprint of her teeth evident against her skin. No matter how hard she tried to formulate a response, she found herself at a loss for words.
Then, unexpectedly, Mason’s gaze shifted away from her.
