Not just the Beta (Oriana and Slade) novel Chapter 135

Ana

She was sitting staring at Maddie, she still looked more than annoyed to her. As Zara told her what had happened at the café, they’d put a movie on and made popcorn, but it was all just a show in case any of that unit decided to listen to the house, and then they were all linked into a four-way mind-link conversation.

Zara had explained to her that Palmer had tried to use his Charm on Maddie, and it more than arced her all up and in all of a split second, she’d gotten angry with him, had yelled at the man even, before stalking away into her office out the back of the café.

Ana was now sitting staring at Maddie. That was an odd reaction to have. Maddie was generally a happy smiling woman, that loved a good game of hide and seek with wolves. ‘How did it go down, why exactly did you get angry? He’s the Gamma you shouldn’t have.’

‘I know what he is, Ana. Maddie had muttered right back, through clenched teeth, and then had been silent for many minutes. Before she just sighed a little on the heavy side ‘He rolled his charm at me, in an effort, I believe, to rid me of my annoyance, to likely gain a little cooperation is all. I actually felt not just the charm roll over me, but his intent, I guess you could say, and I… I kind of just lost it instantly, my only thought right before I yelled at him was ‘how dare he try that shit on me’. she shook her head.

Ana frowned at her now “How much did he roll at you?” she questioned, it was an odd response to have.

‘I don’t know… Maddie huffed.

‘It was barely anything at all.’ Zara commented ‘I felt it, it was very light, he was not trying to sway her into anything, just maybe rid her of that constant annoyance, she has with Vance and now Yuri I’d say. He would’ve picked up on that easily… She, however, reacted quite violently to it.

‘I thought a Gamma could charm anyone?’ Londyn asked them, as she looked at Zara and then to Maddie herself.

‘Hmm, Zara nodded ‘Normally they can. I, as a female Gamma, can charm both males and females. Male Gamma’s can only charm females. I think it’s because all Alpha Units are supposed to have a female Gamma as part of their unit. Would keep their Alpha in check and be able to calm him, stop him from starting wars or offending others.’ She shrugged ‘We, the female Gamma’s, are actually better at Charming those around us. She smiled now ‘But because of our stupid male dominated world, that we’re born into, the Alphas don’t realise this or, once perhaps did, but it got pushed aside for the males of the species at some point.’

‘But Maddie?’ Londyn asked again.

Ana was watching Maddie, she still looked annoyed to her, but Ana knew that was because Maddie understood what Londyn did not. She sighed a little to herself now too. ‘Gamma’s can’t charm their own Mates; they are immune to it.’ Ana told Londyn.

‘That we cannot.’ Zara nodded ‘But immune is not the right word, it ticks them off is a better way to explain it. They feel it, and get angry about the use of it on them. It doesn’t actually work on them.’ Zara’s eyes moved to Maddie. ‘But because they feel it, and understand what it is that is trying to be done to them, immune is not the correct term.

‘They can reject it, I guess is a better way of putting it.’ Zara sighed herself now, ‘It’s also a tell-tale sign that when one of us can’t charm someone, that maybe that person is our Mate, and we either need to try it again and see if it was just a one-off reaction to it or not. If not, hang about until the full moon and see if we’ll scent them out.

‘I’m not his Mate. Maddie snapped and stood up to leave the room. Zara, however, placed a hand on her and rolled her Gamma’s charm over Maddie, and she sighed a little, then sank back down. It easily worked when that charm came from Zara. Two very different and distinctive reactions to both Gammas.

‘So… it was Londyn ‘You now think this Palmer, Slade’s own Gamma, is going to be Maddie’s Mate?’

‘It’s possible, but not yet proven.’ Ana sighed herself ‘if he now thinks that, from Maddie’s reaction to him.

They are not going anywhere.

‘They’re not. Zara stated ‘But not because of Maddie, they all have figured out we’re not human. Don’t exactly know what we are. But Palmer was doing what all Gammas do, sensing all of us out while in that

“And?” both she and Maddie asked.

How the hell had she missed that?

To bloody self-absorbed in her own need to have Slade and his Unit leave town. As much as she didn’t like it, she knew she had to keep that man in town now. ‘Alright, no more trying to make any of them leave, Yuri needs to be here for the full moon, as does Palmer in all likelihood.’ She stated simply. She was just going to have to deal with him, she guessed the game of hide and seek was over.

‘Not to mention, not for Zara. Londyn giggled now, happy to know they weren’t going to be actively trying to get those men to leave. ‘That Beta is obsessed with Zara.

Everyone was suddenly looking at Zara ‘Hey don’t look at me like that. He’s fun to flirt with, but I knew who he was attached to.’

‘Have you even once used your charm on him?’ Maddie asked her.

‘No, why would I? Not on any of them, they would all feel it, know what it meant and give me away as to what I am. I’m not that silly.

Ana sighed, she’d not seen it but from all that she’d heard about this Beta, Vance, he was very attracted to Zara. Not even Maddie warning him off, had worked. It was entirely possible as well, with how persistent he was with Zara. A human girl even to him, until now that was.

‘As for Palmer and Yuri, I have nothing against either of them, Vance I don’t know anything about. I don’t recall anyone in that place named that.” She was curious about who he was, where he came from and why he was part of the unit. When had Hayden been replaced?
