Once a Doormat Now Untouchable (Caleb and Sydney) novel Chapter 420

Chapter 420

Caleb took a deep breath and forced a half-hearted smile. “What are you worried about? We’re still bros. I’m not about to call the cops on him.”

He paused, his expression turning more serious. “I just said those things out of panic earlier, that’s all.”

He was referring to the baby in her womb.

Sydney nodded. “I know.”

Caleb met her gaze, his tone calm yet steady. “Still, if you ever regret it someday, I can talk to him myself. Explain everything.”

By noon, Florence returned to the hospital with a lunchbox of homemade food.

After fussing over Sydney to eat more, she said, “I heard from the doctor that you can be discharged tomorrow?”

Sydney knew Florence’s concern came from the heart, so she smiled and nodded quickly. “Yes, I told you that it’s nothing serious. You really don’t have to worry.’

“Then where do you plan to stay after you’re discharged?” Florence asked.

The doctor had told her that Sydney was not fit for long travel yet.

“I’ll stay at a hotel for a couple of days,” Sydney replied with a light laugh, sipping her soup. “It’s not as bad as the doctor makes it sound. I’ll rest for two or three days, then head back to Jouleston.”

It would also give her a rare chance to take a proper break.

Florence gave her a playful glare. “You call me ‘Madam,’ yet you’d rather stay in a hotel than come to the Hutton estate? Diana already told the maids to prepare a guest room for you.”

Her tone left no room for refusal. “When you’re discharged tomorrow, you’ll go straight to the house and stay there. No arguments.”

Sydney laughed, a little helpless. “But your father-in-law’s back from the army, right? Wouldn’t it be improper for an outsider to stay over?”

Florence waved it off. “He loves a lively house. The more people, the better.”

If anything, someone close to Diana’s age would brighten his spirits. His biggest regret in life was never meeting Vee.

For

years, whenever someone mentioned Vee, Albus would hold that photograph and cry until his eyes turned red, no matter who tried to console him.

With things settled, Sydney stopped resisting. “Alright then. This way, I won’t have to interrupt your treatment either.”

“I’m asking you to rest, not to work,” Florence scolded with a frown. “The doctor said recovery time.”

Sydney chuckled. “It’s just a few needles. Nothing serious.”

She knew her condition well. That morning, she had already undergone an acupuncture session to stabilize the pregnancy.

Her real reason for not returning to Jouleston wasn’t exhaustion but fear. The person behind the car accident still hadn’t been caught, and she was terrified they wouldn’t stop until she was dead, maybe even striking again on her way home.

Penelope trembled with panic when she learned that the man she’d paid so much to hire had been caught. She had spent a sleepless night in Brimcrest, her nerves stretched to the breaking point.
