Raymond had spent the most time around Sydney. He caught the confusion on her face and flicked a look at his mother.
Florence had come with only one purpose, to see Sydney. Now that she stood before her and saw her safe and whole, relief washed away every other thought.
She noticed Raymond's cue and realized Sydney felt boxed in. She reached out at once. "I heard Diana and the others were coming to see you. I happened to be free, so I came along."
"Thank you for worrying about me." Warmth settled in Sydney's chest. She moved closer and sat beside Florence, then glanced at the elderly couple and greeted them politely. "Mr. Albus. Ms. Elizabeth."
The names landed like needles.
Albus held himself together. Elizabeth did not. Her eyes reddened at once. She stood and nearly rushed forward, only to be caught by Diana's hand.
Diana leaned close and whispered, "Remember what you promised before you came."
Elizabeth looked at Sydney's pale face and forced herself to stop.
Diana had planned to come only with Florence. Theodore insisted on joining. Then the housekeeper let something slip while preparing the gifts. That was how this group ended up together.
What promise could Elizabeth have made? To keep her emotions in check. To avoid shocking Vee.
Yet the granddaughter they had lost for decades stood right there. How could she feel nothing?
Agatha had no idea why the woman had reacted so strongly. When she saw Elizabeth calm again, she smoothed things over. "They didn't just come because they miss you. Look at what they brought."
Sydney followed her gesture. The cabinet by the entryway was stacked with expensive gift boxes. She turned back, startled.
"You coming to see me already means a lot. These gifts are too much. I can't—"
Before she could finish, Diana patted her hand and laughed. "You've known my mom long enough. She treats you like a daughter. If you make her carry all this back, she might cry the whole way home."
