Chapter Twenty Six
“Everything I did in the past was a mistake, one I regret every single day. God knows I hate myself everyday for it, “Damon said, his voice thick with emotion.
“But I’m a change man now, Bree. I can’t live without you. I want us to be a family again. You, me, Jessie, our daughter… even your son. I’m willing to accept him if it means getting you back.”
For the briefest moment, Amber couldn’t bring herself to speak. She couldn’t believe he’d just said that. She stared at him, stunned.
“Is… is that her name?” she finally asked, her voice barely a whisper. “Jessie?“.
Damon nodded slowly. “Yes, Bree. I named her Jess because I remember how much you love the name. And she looks every bit like you.”
Amber eyes welled up. This time, she couldn’t stop the tears from falling. Damon reached his hands to wipe them off but she slapped his hand away.
“Don’t you dare touch me!” she snapped, her voice trembling. “I don’t care why you’re saying all this now, Damon. Truth or not, it doesn’t change the fact that you hurt me and I’ll never forgive you for that. I don’t need your help to get my daughter back. The only reason I came back was because of her, and I’ll bring her home even if it’s the last thing I do.”
Without waiting for his response, Amber tore herself free from his grip and stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind her.
“Wait, Bree!” Damon called, hurrying after her but he stopped when his phone buzzed in his pocket.
He reached into his pocket and pull out his phone. The name Jake flashed on his screen. Turned out it was a call from his gamma.
“What is it Jake?” Damon barked into the receiver as he answered.
“I apologize for interrupting, Alpha, but we need you at the pack house. There’s been an attack,” Jake’s tense voice came through, and Damon felt a pang in his chest.
“What? When? Who would Dare?”
“I’m not sure, Alpha. A group of rogues slipped in unnoticed and attacked. From the looks of it, it seems to be the same wolves that have been targeting us for months.”
“And my daughter? Is she safe?” Damon’s voice dropped, his grip tightening around the phone.
“Jessie’s fine, Alpha, but there were casualties. Five dead, ten injured. The elder council requests your presence.”
Damon let out a slow, shaky breath. Jessie was safe… that was all that mattered for now.
“I’m on my way.” He said, ending the call.
Damon descended down the stairs and scanned the distance hoping to find Amber. But she was long gone.
Taking a deep breathe, he climbed into his car, where his driver waited.
“Drive home.” He ordered flatly.
The driver nodded and started the car engine, driving towards the pack house. Soon, the city was a blur as Damon was lost in thoughts, wondering who would dare attack his home.
This was the third attack this month, making it the eleventh one in three months. Each time, the rogues had infiltrated his territory, striking at the heart of his pack and killing his people.

It was an insult, a direct challenge to his authority.
“Fuck!” Damon snarled, slamming his fist against the car door. His knuckles turned white. He already had too much on his plate, and now this.
An hour later, the car pulled up before the pack house. Damon stepped out just as Jake appeared to meet him.
“Welcome back, Alpha,” Jake said, bowing respectfully as they strode through the hall.
“Tell me everything,” Damon demanded.
“Same pattern as before. Burned homes, dead wolves, and several wounded. It happened before we could respond. By the time we arrived, they were gone.
“And the rogues? Did you track them?”
“We tried, but their trail vanished in the woods. Whoever they are, they’re experts at covering their tracks.”
“And the council?” Damon asked, his tone sharp.
“They’re demanding a meeting. They believe it’s about time you consider signing a treaty with the other Alphas and ask for help.”
Damon stopped in his tracks, his jaw tightening. “Help? A treaty?” His voice dropped dangerously low. “Do they think I’m a joke?”
He took a deep breath and faced Jake. “There will be no treaty. Keep this matter inside the pack. No one outside hears about it, understood?”
Jake nodded, hesitating. “And the council meeting?”
“There will be no meeting,” Damon said coldly. “Tell the council to sit in their damn houses. I’ll handle this myself.”
