Chapter Twenty Eight
“What do you mean honey?” Amber asked softly, unsure if she had heard her little boy correctly.
“Will Daddy come back, mummy?”
“Why… Why are you asking me that honey?” She asked again, trying to conceal the shock in her voice. Jason had asked her that question once before, and she’d told him his father was far away and wouldn’t be returning anytime soon. Since then, he had never brought it up again.
“Because I miss him, Mummy. Jacob makes fun of me every day because I don’t have a Daddy. His Daddy drops him off at school every morning. Hope also comes to school with her Daddy, and she said he helps her with homework and plays with her. I want my Daddy too. When is he going to come back?” Jason’s voice broke as tears streamed down his face.
“Come here, baby,” Amber murmured, pulling him into a warm hug. “Everything’s going to be okay. Daddy will come back for you, okay?”
“Really, mama? You promise?”
Amber smiled weakly. “Yes, honey. I promise.”
The boy’s tears faded into a small, hopeful smile. Amber pulled him into a warm hug, gently rocking him until he fell asleep in her arms. Once he was soundly asleep, she tucked him to bed, brushed a kiss on his forehead and gently slipped from the bed.
She picked up her phone from the nightstand, threw on a light fur coat, and stepped out onto the adjoining balcony. There was a small round table and chair in the balcony where she sat, gazing up at the stars.
Remembering something was missing, Amber stood up and walk straight to the small mini bar in the living room. She picked one of her favorite drinks and walked back to the balcony.
She poured herself a drink and down it in one go before letting out a weary sigh.
Jason’s words echoed in her head and Amber couldn’t help but feel a pang in her chest. She had been so occupied with work and trying to build a life for him that she hadn’t realized how deeply he was being affected and mocked at school for not having a dad.
Amber drew a shaky breath and wiped away the tears threatening to fall. Although she had promised Jason that his daddy would come back someday, deep down she wasn’t sure that would ever happen.
How could she let Damon back into their lives after everything he’d done? After all the pain he caused her… the betrayal, the heartbreak… the order for her execution.
Her hands trembled as she reached for her phone. She unlocked the device and went straight to the search box in her browser. She typed Damon’s name and instantly, countless articles popped up.
Some were about his company’s new partnership deal with MPK and how his business had skyrocketed in recent days. Others were about how handsome he was, and how adorable he looked with his daughter.
Amber clicked on one of the photos, and her breath hitched. It was a picture of Damon and Jessie sitting in a restaurant, sharing ice cream. From the angle, she could tell it had been taken without his knowledge.
“My baby,” she whispered, a tear rolling down her cheek as she traced the image on her screen.
Jessie looked exactly like her just like Damon had said. The little girl had Damon’s eyes, but had her looks and same chestnut hair that stopped just below her neck.
Amber stared at the photo for a long time before setting her phone aside. She buried her face in her palms and cried silently, the pain pressing heavily on her chest.

She didn’t know how long she had been out there for when she finally noticed how chill the air had gotten. She quickly picked her phone and empty glass and went back inside, placing them on the nightstand.
Then she crawled into bed beside Jason, wrapping her arms around him tightly, hoping his warmth would cure her pain and anxiety for the night.
