Angelina’s POV
It sent chills through the assembly. You could feel the discipline. The absolute loyalty.
The candidates looked impressed. Maybe a little intimidated.
The ten men moved into the container maze. Disappeared into the structure.
Caelan’s gaze lingered on me for two seconds, then he turned and disappeared behind containers.
I looked at the weapon selection area. Tables lined up with rifles, pistols, ammunition. Everything we’d need.
The first candidate to move was a guy from the front row. Mid-thirties. He walked toward the tables. His jaw was tight. “Screw it. I’ll aim for
non-lethal shots.”
That broke the hesitation. Others started moving too. Heading toward the weapons.
Some people were still standing there. Looking uncertain.
Felix’s voice cut through the noise. “Anyone who wants to withdraw can do so now. No penalty to previous scores.”
A woman raised her hand. “Sir, can you confirm this is authorized? Live ammunition against moving targets?”
Felix looked at her. His expression was neutral. “The specialist instructor has full autonomy over his portion of the assessment. I told you that
already.”
“But sir-
“Either participate or withdraw. Your choice.” Felix’s tone was final. “I don have authority to override his methods.”
The woman looked conflicted. Then she lowered her hand. Walked toward he weapons.
I slowly walked forward. Watched everyone rush forward. Grabbing rifles. Loading magazines. The noise level increased as people talked
nervously.
Near the front, several female candidates had clustered together. Their voles carried across the area.
“At least the eye candy is good,” one of them said. “Did you see those warriors?”
Another woman laughed. ‘Right? Way hotter than any actors I’ve seen.”
“Makes this insane test almost worth it.”
They were trying to ease the tension. I understood that. Humor helped some people cope with stress.
I walked toward the weapon tables. No hurry. Just steady movement.
The selection was extensive. Pistols in various calibers. Nine-millimeter. Forty-five. Rifles ranging from AR-15 variants to tactical precision

models. Submachine guns. Different ammunition types.
I moved to the rifle section. Picked up a tactical rifle. AR-15 platform. Good balance. Decent weight.
Checked the action. Smooth. The trigger pull felt right.
Examined the sight. No misalignment issues this time.
Loaded a thirty-round magazine. The ammunition was definitely live. I could tell from the weight and feel.
My movements were practiced. Someone nearby was watching me. I glanced over. Riley.
“You’re very comfortable with that,” she said quietly.
*I’ve used rifles before.”

Riley stepped closer. Her voice dropped. “Aria, whatever your background is, be careful today. That instructor is watching you specifically. I saw
the way he looked at you during the briefing.”
“I didn’t notice.”
“Everyone noticed. He stared at you for at least five seconds. That’s not normal instructor behavior.”
I met her eyes. “What are you suggesting?”
“I’m suggesting you need to be extra careful. Don’t give him any reason to single you out. Don’t show off. Just perform adequately and move
on.”
‘I’ll perform at my normal level.”
Riley’s expression showed concern. “Your normal level is what got Saffron hospitalized yesterday. Maybe tone it down today.”
“Noted.”

She didn’t look convinced but she walked away. I finished my weapon check. Slung the rifle across my back. Walked toward the ammunition
supply to grab extra magazines.
That’s when I heard Saffron’s voice. Loud. Carrying across the entire area
“Hey everyone, remember Sterling here got in because of her shooting scares.”
I stopped walking. Turned my head slightly.
Saffron was standing near the starting line. Her face looked pale. But her eyes had that same hostile glint.
She shouldn’t even be here. After yesterday’s medical emergency, I’d assumed she’d quit the selection.
I thought Saffron would have learned her lesson. Would have backed off after the humiliation yesterday. After being exposed as a saboteur.
But no. She was still trying to turn people against me. Still so foolishly overestimating herself.

If She wanted to keep playing these games, I’d stop being merciful.
She wanted to see what I was really capable of? She’d get her wish.

“If we don’t move fast, she’ll take all the high-value targets, Saffron continued. Her voice was deliberately loud. Making sure everyone heard.
Several candidates looked at me. Then at Saffron.
“Better hurry if you want any points.”
The effect was immediate. People who’d been taking their time suddenly shed up. Grabbing weapons faster. Loading magazines quicker.
The entire atmosphere shifted. Became more rushed. More competitive.
Saffron caught my eye. Smiled slightly. Then turned and walked toward the starting area.
Subtle. She’d just turned this into a race without saying it directly. Made everyone think they needed to compete for limited points.
Which was stupid. The scoring system gave everyone the same opportunity Twenty points maximum. It didn’t matter who went first or last.
But fear and competition made people irrational. Made them rush.
I watched candidates hurrying toward the starting line. Some were still fumbling with their equipment. Others were running final checks while
walking.
Mistakes. All of them making small mistakes because they were rushing.
I turned back to the ammunition table. Selected three extra magazines. Loaded them carefully. No rush.
Real predators don’t rush. They wait for the perfect moment to strike.
When I finished, most candidates had already gathered at the starting point. Forming a loose crowd. All eager to begin.
I walked over. Took a position near the back of the group.
Caelan emerged from behind a container. He’d been somewhere inside the maze. Probably checking his warriors’ positions.
He walked to the front. Stood on a raised platform so everyone could see him.
“Listen up. The order will be determined by your current ranking. Highest anked goes first. Lowest ranked goes last.”
He pulled out his tablet. Started reading names.
