Chapter 156*
Angelina’s POV
Felix was still talking. Transportation will take you back to the compound now. You have the evening to prepare. Get your affairs in order.
Tomorrow decides everything.”
He gestured toward the trucks. “Load up. Move out.”
People started walking. Slowly at first. Then faster as everyone wanted to leave this place behind.
I moved with the crowd. Climbed into the second truck..
Found a seat near the back. Sat down.
Other candidates filled in around me. Most were silent. A few were still crying quietly.
The truck engine started. We began moving.
The ride back was quiet. No one wanted to talk about what had happened.
I looked out the small window. Watched the facility disappear behind us.
Thirty minutes later, we pulled into the compound. The trucks stopped near the barracks.
Everyone climbed out. Started walking toward the buildings.
I was heading toward my barracks when I heard footsteps behind me.
“Aria!”
I turned. Riley and Chen were jogging toward me.
Riley’s expression was concerned. “We heard what happened. Are you okay
“I’m fine.”
Chen pushed his glasses up. “We saw some of the others. They look traumatized.”
“The test was difficult,” I said.
Riley exchanged a glance with Chen. Then looked back at me. “Have you eaten? We were about to get dinner. You should come with us.”
I hadn’t eaten since this morning. My stomach was empty.
“Okay,” I said.
We started walking toward the dining facility. The sky was fully dark now stars visible overhead.
The walk to the dining facility should have been straightforward. Ten minutes across the compound. Simple.

Chapter 156 *
But nothing was ever simple when Saffron Rodriguez was involved.
Riley, Chen, and I had just turned the corner past Building Seven when I heard it. That particular pitch of voice that meant someone was performing for an audience.
“Some people just know how to work the system, if you know what I meant
I kept walking. Didn’t change my pace. Didn’t look up.
Riley glanced at me. Her expression asked a silent question. I shook my head slightly.
Saffron’s voice got louder. More deliberate. “Yeah, tactical skills are one thing, but there are other ways to score points with certain instructors.”

One of her followers laughed. Too loud. Too forced. “Oh my god, totally. Some girls will do anything for a good evaluation.”
They were standing in a cluster near the entrance to the dining facility. Saffron in the center. Vanessa on her left. Three other girls I didn’t know well arranged around them like backup singers.
All of them watching us approach.
Chen pushed his glasses up. “Should we take a different route?”
“No,” I said. “We’re going to dinner.”
Riley moved slightly closer to my side. Protective instinct. I appreciated it but didn’t need it.
As we got closer, one of Saffron’s friends spoke up again. “At least Saffron’s good at real combat. Hand-to-hand is her specialty.”
“Right?” Vanessa chimed in. “The Pit’s gonna be her playground. Some people are actually trained for this stuff.”
I could feel their eyes on me. Waiting for a reaction.
I kept my expression neutral. Kept walking.
We were maybe fifteen feet away when Saffron spoke directly. Not to me. To Vanessa. But loud enough that half the courtyard could hear.
“You know what’s funny? Some candidates think they’re special just because they got lucky on one or two tests. But tomorrow’s different. Tomorrow you can’t hide behind tactical plans or equipment. It’s just you and your opponent. Raw skill. No tricks.”
I stopped walking.
Riley tensed beside me. “Aria, don’t.”
But I wasn’t going to cause a scene. That wasn’t my style.
I looked at Saffron’s little group. Let my gaze sweep across all five of them Then I spoke. My voice was calm. Conversational.
“If talking shit burned calories, you’d all be in great shape.”

Chapter 156*
Riley made a choking sound. Tried to cover it with a cough. Failed completely. Her laugh burst out before she could stop it.
“Oh my god, Aria.”
Chens eyes went wide behind his glasses. He tried to keep his face straight. Couldn’t quite manage it.
The comment had been quiet. Almost throwaway. But in the evening silence, it carried perfectly.
Saffron’s face went red. Her friends expressions shifted from smug to shocked.
I started walking again. Planned to go right past them.
But Saffron moved.
She stepped directly into my path. Blocked the entrance to the dining facility.
Her face was flushed. Eyes bright with anger. “What did you just say to m
“You heard me.”

“You think you’re so fucking clever, don’t you?” Saffron’s voice was getting higher. “Walking around here like you’re better than everyone else.”
I didn’t respond. Just waited for her to move.
She didn’t.
Instead, she leaned closer. Her eyes narrowed. Focused on something.
Then her expression changed. Confusion. Then realization. Then something like triumph.
“Holy SHIT!” Her voice exploded across the courtyard. “Everyone look at her neck! Are those fucking hickeys?!”
The entire area went silent.
I felt Riley go rigid beside me.
Saffron was pointing now. Her finger aimed at my throat. “Oh my god, you actually DID IT! You screwed the interrogator!”
Her voice was shrill. Carrying across the compound. “Jesus Christ, Sterling how desperate are you? That’s disgusting!”
Vanessa’s mouth fell open. “Wait, seriously?”
“Look at her neck!” Saffron practically shrieked. “Those are bite marks! She actually fucked him!”
The three other girls started making sounds. Gasps. Exclamations of shock and disgust.
“I knew something was off!”
“That’s so gross!”

Chapter 156
“No wonder she got cleared so fast.”
People were stopping now. Turning to look. Candidates walking past the courtyard slowing down. Staring.
The whispers started immediately. Spreading like ripples in water.
I could see it happening. See the story taking shape. See people’s expressions changing as they looked at me. At my neck.
Riley stepped forward. “Saffron, shut your mouth.”

“Why? Because I’m telling the truth?” Saffron’s voice was triumphant now Everyone’s been wondering how Sterling keeps scoring so high. Now we know. She’s sleeping with the instructors!”
Chen moved in front of me. His voice was sharp. Cold. “Are you serious right now? There are cameras EVERYWHERE in those rooms.”
Saffron hesitated. Just for a second.
