125.Chapter 125
Alaric pulled his hand away from Ophelia, his expression clouded. “Ophelia, now you’re telling me you don’t like me and want to call off the engagement? That really breaks my heart.”
He lowered his gaze, staring at her delicate hand in his, his eyes darkening just a bit.
Seeing Alaric with his head down, looking absolutely devastated, Ophelia couldn’t help but twitch her lips. He made it look like she really was some heartless player who’d just used him and dumped him.
But… she was being totally framed here!
“Alaric, seriously? What are you even talking about?” Ophelia snapped, her eyes flashing dangerously.
‘Wow, this guy’s got guts. He’s a master at flipping the script and playing the victim, Ophelia thought.
“I’m just telling it like it is,” Alaric replied, putting on the perfect act of a heartbroken, abandoned man.
“I came to your office to treat you because you got injured saving me. I couldn’t just stand by and do nothing. And that thing at the hospital…” Ophelia’s eyes flickered with unease. “That was just an accident, and you know it.”
“All I know is you threw yourself at me, and now you’re just tossing me aside, Alaric whined, acting like some pitiful little husband who’d been abandoned.
Ophelia frowned and covered her face, unable to bear looking at him anymore.
‘Alaric, do you even realize how ridiculous you look right now?’ Ophelia thought.
Ophelia took a deep breath, clinging to the last shred of her sanity as she gritted out, “Alaric, just shut up.”
Seriously, she was this close to tossing him out right then and there.
“Ophelia, Alaric, what’s going on here?” Tristan’s voice broke in, sounding confused as he glanced between the two of them.
“Grandpa?” Ophelia instantly tensed up when she saw Tristan suddenly appear.
‘How long has Grandpa been standing there?’ Ophelia wondered.
‘Please tell me he didn’t hear any of that, she thought, anxiety prickling at her.
“Grandpa, did you enjoy the drama? Hope you got some rest,” Alaric said, flashing Tristan a laid-back grin.
When Alaric first showed up, Tristan hadn’t mentioned the engagement at all. Then, when Ophelia arrived, Tristan had her entertain Alaric while he quietly slipped away.
Alaric knew Tristan was just trying to get a feel for what was really going on between him and Ophelia.
Now that Tristan probably had some idea, he decided to pop back in.
Tristan didn’t look the least bit embarrassed at being called out. He just kept up his confused act, looking at the two of them and asking, “So… what exactly are you two up to?”
Ophelia frowned slightly. ‘Wait, is that… a hint of a smile in Grandpa’s eyes?’ she wondered.
‘Yeah, I’m pretty sure I’m not imagining it. But what’s got him so amused?’ she thought, baffled.
Ophelia blinked, a little lost, and followed Tristan’s gaze, only to suddenly notice that Alaric was still holding her hand.
Her eyes flew wide in surprise, and she snatched her hand away from Alaric like she’d touched a live wire. “Seriously, Grandpa, it’s not what it looks like! Don’t misunderstand!” she blurted, flustered.
But her cheeks flushed bright red from embarrassment, which, of course, just made her look even guiltier.
“Grandpa, since you’re here, maybe you can settle this for us. Ophelia,” Alaric began, but Ophelia quickly clamped her hand over his mouth, giving him a fierce look that said loud and clear, “Don’t even think about it.”
