Chapter 299
It was the middle of the night.
The intensive care unit. Ryan was staring nervously at Alaric, his voice low and anxious as he kept repeating, Mr. Caldwell, you can’t let anything happen to you. Please, wake up soon.”
“He’s still not awake?” Ella asked, her voice full of concern.
Ryan turned around and saw Ella coming in with Ophelia. He quickly got to his feet. “Ms. Rowle, why are you here?”
“How is he?” Ophelia asked, worry flickering in her eyes as she saw how pale Ryan looked.
Ryan shook his head, feeling helpless. “He still hasn’t responded at all. I’m really worried…”
Ella frowned, puzzled. “It’s been hours since the surgery. The anesthesia should’ve worn off by now. Why is he still not awake?”
“That’s exactly why I’m so worried. What if Mr. Caldwell never wakes up?” Ryan looked utterly defeated. He honestly had no idea how he’d managed to get through the night.
“He will,” Ophelia growled, her face dark with worry.
She looked up through the glass at Alaric, silently telling herself, ‘He will wake up. He has to.
“Boss, don’t get all worked up,” Ella said, trying to reassure her. “Mr. Caldwell’s always had luck on his side. He’ Il pull through.”
She shot Ryan a glare and snapped, “Don’t jinx it. Quit worrying. Mr. Caldwell’s gonna be fine.”
After that, Ella shot a quick look at Ophelia, only relaxing a little when she saw Ophelia wasn’t losing her cool.
After the surgery, Boss was so wiped out she actually fainted. She’d barely come to before heading straight here to check on Alaric. You could tell just by looking: she was seriously worried about him.
Ryan’s words were like twisting the knife in Ophelia’s heart.
Ella really didn’t want Ryan’s careless words to set Ophelia off or make things worse for her.
That thought flashed through Ella’s mind, and she moved a little closer to Ryan, whispering, “Careful what you say. After Boss passed out, she kept muttering about danger, telling someone to get out of the way, and she wouldn’t stop calling Mr. Caldwell’s name.
“She woke up all shaken. She was definitely freaked out by what happened to him.”
Ryan looked apologetic. “Sorry, I didn’t know.”
Ella rolled her eyes at him, clearly annoyed. “Boss wanted to come over the second she woke up. I had to practically beg her to rest first because she was so wiped out.
“She really had no choice but to take a break. Now that she’s finally got a bit of strength, she’s here, so don’t go saying anything depressing around her, okay?”
“Alright,” Ryan replied, shooting a cautious glance at Ophelia before asking softly, “Ms. Rowle, why don’t you get some rest? If Mr. Caldwell wakes up, I’ll let you know right away.”
Ophelia shook her head, her eyes dark with worry. “You go get some rest. I’ll stay here.”
“But…” Ryan hesitated.
“Go on, you can’t keep pushing yourself like this,” Ophelia said, then turned to Ella. “You’ve been looking after me ever since I fainted. Now it’s your turn to get some rest.”
“But…” Ella hesitated, biting her lip. But seeing the look in Ophelia’s eyes, she knew there was no changing her mind, so she finally nodded.
“Boss, if anything comes up, just call me,” Ella said, then motioned for Ryan to follow her. “Let’s go get some rest. Once we’ve recovered, we’ll come back and take over for you
