**Paths Lead To Purpose — Kevin Masters**
**Chapter 30**
“Yeah,” a voice interjected from the crowd, a ripple of agreement sparking amongst the onlookers.
Abigail, sensing the precariousness of her position, pressed on with urgency, “Aaron learned medicine under the esteemed Professor Langston. His reputation as a skilled physician is well-established; otherwise, how could Dunhollow Hospital have brought him on board?”
A smirk danced on Ophelia’s lips, laced with a hint of mockery. “Abigail, it’s essential that people base their claims on facts. If you continue to spread such unfounded accusations, I could very well have grounds for a defamation suit. Do you really want to share a jail cell with your son?”
In Abigail’s eyes, Ophelia was nothing more than a lowly, audacious woman, unworthy of casting threats in her direction. “Ophelia, spare me your threats. I’m merely stating the truth. Without your charming lover, my son would never have found himself behind bars.”
“Ah, it seems you’re blissfully unaware of the true nature of your son’s actions. Perhaps it would be wise to let Mr. Barrett enlighten you?” Just as she finished her sentence, Connor emerged, closely followed by the previously absent Elijah and Emeric, all three stepping out of the hospital’s imposing entrance.
The moment Abigail’s gaze landed on Elijah, her expression morphed into one of pure fury. “So, you two old cowards finally decided to show yourselves,” she spat, her voice dripping with disdain.
She had been causing a commotion for what felt like hours, yet they had remained hidden until now. ‘Why did they only choose to reveal themselves when Ophelia appeared?’ Abigail pondered, irritation bubbling beneath the surface.
Elijah’s icy glare met hers, his tone devoid of warmth. “If it weren’t for Dr. Vossen’s timely arrival, we wouldn’t waste a second on a troublemaker like you.”
If Alaric hadn’t disclosed that she was Ophelia’s foster mother, he would have been tempted to have her forcibly removed long ago.
Abigail’s expression darkened further, shadows of anger creeping into her features. “Dr. Vossen? Who is this Dr. Vossen? You’re the ones responsible for imprisoning my son!”
Emeric’s demeanor shifted, the gravity of the situation evident in his voice. “This is Ophelia, the very individual who saved Mr. Caldwell’s life. Had she not intervened that day, your son would have recklessly pushed Mr. Caldwell into surgery. He likely wouldn’t have survived.”
As the two men referred to Ophelia as a miracle worker, Abigail’s complexion drained of color. “What nonsense are you spewing? How could she possibly be a doctor? She clearly abandoned her medical studies ages ago.”
Ophelia’s lips curled into a confident smirk. “Mrs. Vossen, I simply felt that Professor Langston had little left to teach me, so I chose to forgo formal education for the sake of Aaron’s future.
Many in the crowd recognized Alaric’s name. The sight of Ryan extending such a polite invitation to Ophelia indicated their lack of familiarity, further solidifying the crowd’s belief that Ophelia and Alaric were not connected in any personal capacity.
“Lover? It turns out she’s the one who saved a life,” someone whispered in disbelief.
“Yeah, that foster mother’s accusations are baseless. She has no proof whatsoever,” another voice chimed in.
Ophelia felt a sense of satisfaction at Alaric’s thoughtful arrangement, her smile softening as she replied, “Alright, I’ll accept the invitation.”
In that moment, Elijah stepped forward, his voice cutting through the tension like a knife. “Mrs. Vossen, let me remind you that this is a hospital, a public space. We have shown Dr. Vossen a measure of respect by allowing you to remain here thus far.
“Now that the situation is clear, if you refuse to leave, you will come to regret your decision.”
Abigail’s expression darkened to an extreme, her defiance unwavering. “Regret it? I’d love to see what you think you can do. Come on, if you’ve got the guts, let’s see it!”
