Chapter 308
Chapter 308
“Thank goodness,” Ophelia breathed out in relief. His condition was stable now, so as long as he got some rest, he’d be fine.
Feeling a bit more at ease, Ophelia tucked the report away.
Just then, her phone rang. Ophelia picked up. “Hey, Ella.”
“Boss, how’s Mr. Caldwell doing?” Ella teased, her tone playful.
Ophelia couldn’t help rolling her eyes. “The company’s all yours for now. I’m stuck at the hospital, so just handle everything however you want.”
“What?” Ella groaned, her face falling. “No way, Boss. I can’t handle this.”
“You totally can,” Ophelia said, sounding sure of herself. “You’ve handled things before, and you did a great job.”
“It’s not the same! Back then, you weren’t around, so things weren’t this crazy,” Ella complained, sounding frustrated. “Fine, I’ Il stop gossiping, okay?”
‘Guess I’m getting punished for all that gossip, Ella thought.
“Too late,” Ophelia replied, not feeling sorry at all.
Ella just pouted, “Alright, Boss.”
“Mm,” Ophelia hummed, thinking, ‘Let’s see if you can keep out of trouble from now on.’
Before Ophelia could even finish, Ella jumped in again. “Alright, Boss, just focus on taking care of Mr. Caldwell these days. Maybe by the time he’s discharged, you two will finally make it official!”
‘At least all my days slaving away as your loyal minion won’t be for nothing, Ella thought.
“Beep, beep, beep.”
Ella heard the busy signal, pouted, and resigned herself to picking up the paperwork.
‘No more front-row seat to the drama. Guess I’m just stuck being a workhorse now,’ Ella thought.
Night fell.
Alaric’s hospital room.
Ophelia slowly opened her eyes, still half-asleep, only to find herself snuggled up in Alaric’s arms.
She stared in a daze, her mind blank. ‘Wait, how did I end up here?’
Alaric must have sensed she was awake, because he spoke up. “Ophelia, you’re awake.”
“How did I end up in your arms?” Ophelia asked, her voice full of confusion as she tried to make sense of the situation.
All she remembered was that after lunch, she’d been leaning on the side of his bed and drifted off without realizing it. So how did she end up snuggled up next to him like this?
“Oh, I saw you sleeping all hunched over, so I called your name, and next thing I knew, you were right here in my arms,” Alaric said, sounding so innocent and matter-of-fact that it almost seemed/believable.
Ophelia’s frown deepened as she mumbled, “Seriously?”
‘Even if I was half-asleep, I wouldn’t just crawl into his arms like that… would I?’ she thought.
“That’s exactly what happened,” Alaric swore up and down, sounding dead serious, like he was worried she wouldn’t believe him.
The more Ophelia thought about it, the less sense it made. If she hadn’t climbed into his arms herself, there was no way Alaric could’ve pulled it off. He was in no shape to do something like that.
But if it wasn’t him, then none of it made sense either.
Ophelia kept turning it over in her mind, but she still couldn’t make sense of it.
Alaric’s lips curled into a sly smile. “Don’t think too hard about it. I’m not bothered at all. Honestly, you climbing into my arms on your own? That’s the best part for me.”
