Chapter 339
Chapter 339
“How can you say that? What makes her think she can just come to my house?” Scarlett shot back, clearly annoyed.
Claire chimed in awkwardly, “Zoe can think for herself, you know. She’s not some package you can just ship wherever you want.”
“Oh, so all that concern for her is just for show, huh? It’s all talk with you guys.” Ophelia sneered, her lips curling in disdain.
“Who are you even trying to impress with this act? Always acting all high and mighty, telling everyone else what to do. Seriously, how do you even have the guts?”
Her words made Scarlett and Claire’s faces twist with embarrassment and anger. Their expressions were absolutely priceless.
Stunned into silence by Ophelia’s comeback, the two shot Victoria a look. “Victoria, you really need to teach this kid some manners. If she keeps this up, she’s going to embarrass the whole Rowle family.”
“Then you really don’t need to worry about it. If you want to take Zoe in and look after her, be my guest. But if you don’t, then stop making snide remarks and trying to put us down,” Victoria said, her face darkening, showing the kind of authority you’d expect from the lady of the house.
“Don’t worry, Scarlett, Claire,” Oliver reminded them with a cold scoff. “Ophelia won’t embarrass the Rowle family. Out there, people treat her with nothing but respect. Most of them are practically lining up to curry favor with her.”
Scarlett and Claire were so furious they were almost speechless, fuming with frustration.
“Mom, are you trying to kick me out of the Rowle family too?” Zoe’s voice was soft, but the hurt in her eyes was impossible to miss. She looked like she’d just been stabbed in the heart.
Victoria froze, completely thrown off. “Why would I ever want to send you away?” she blurted out, sounding genuinely confused.
“But you just said I should go live with Scarlett or Claire. So… you don’t want me anymore?” Zoe’s tears spilled over, her whole face crumpling in disappointment.
“That’s not what I meant, I swear…” Victoria stammered, panic rising in her chest. She’d only said that to defend Ophelia, not to push Zoe away.
“Zoe, even now, are you really going to let your resentment cloud your reason?” Ophelia’s voice was icy, her gaze distant and cold. She looked at Zoe like she was looking at a complete stranger.
No normal person would say that right now.
“Reason?” Zoe scoffed. “You think I’m not being rational?”
“I think I’ve never been more rational in my life,” Zoe laughed, the sound bleak and miserable, her eyes so red as if they’d been soaked in blood.
After that bitter laugh, Zoe’s eyes burned with hatred as she stared at Ophelia. “Ophelia, you win.”
She’d tried everything, but in the end, she still lost.
‘Is Ophelia really better than me?’ Zoe thought, the doubt eating her alive.
Ophelia gave Zoe a cold look, her voice steady as she said, “I was never trying to compete with you.”
This is just the result of her own choices. She brought it all on herself.
“You weren’t competing?” Zoe scoffed, her voice sharp with accusation. “Don’t give me that. Ever since you came back, you’ve been pushing me aside, trying to put me down. And now you’re acting like you’re so calm and above it all?”
Ophelia didn’t get mad, she just let out a laugh, raising an eyebrow at Zoe. “Why would I even bother to push you down? What do you have that’s worth my effort?”
