Chapter 341

“Uh, I…” Zoe was stunned, never expected Alaric to talk to her.

Before Zoe could continue, Alaric interrupted, his voice cold as ice. “I heard you mention our engagement, Miss Rowle.”

‘Still talking big about happiness? Who does she think she is, acting like she deserves it?’ Alaric sneered to himself.

“Yes, I was talking about the engagement between the Rowle and Caldwell families, but…” Zoe bit her lip, then steeled herself and looked straight at Alaric.

“It’s just that, for all these years, the Rowle family has always taken it for granted that the engagement was between you and me. So… I’ve always wished I could be your wife.”

With things as they were, Zoe knew she had no choice but to put everything on the line.

‘Maybe Alaric will finally see how sincere I’ve been all these years and change his mind, Zoe thought, desperately holding onto the faintest hope.

“There is indeed an engagement between the Rowle and Caldwell families,” Alaric said, his gaze frosty. “But after all these years, you should have known it was nothing but an empty promise.”

If he cared about her at all, he wouldn’t have kept his distance for so many years.

Zoe’s heart ached. She couldn’t help but ask, “So with me, it’s just some meaningless arrangement? But why are you so different with Ophelia? Is it just because she’s the true Rowle heiress?”

“You never really understood,” Alaric replied, unusually patient. “This has nothing to do with the Rowle family. I care about her simply because she’s herself. The fact that she happens to be the Rowle heiress is just a coincidence.”

He only cared about Ophelia, not her status as the Rowle heiress.

As long as it’s her, it doesn’t matter whether she’s the Rowle heiress or not.

“You’re lying, aren’t you? If she wasn’t the Rowle heiress, you two would never have even met, right?” Zoe snapped, her voice tinged with frustration. ‘If Ophelia hadn’t suddenly come back into the picture, none of this would’ve happened, she thought bitterly.

“No, I met her long before she ever became the Rowle heiress,” Alaric replied. He already knew what she was capable of, and even back then, he found himself genuinely intrigued by her.

“So you two already knew each other before?” Tristan chuckled. “No wonder you really do treat Ophelia differently.”

“Mr. Rowle, I think you all should know by now. She really is one of a kind,” Alaric said meaningfully.

As Ophelia’s abilities kept shining through, everyone couldn’t help but admire her more and more.

“Naturally,” Tristan said, lifting his chin with obvious pride.

His heart swelled with satisfaction. His precious Ophelia was finally getting the recognition she deserved.

“Since I happened to walk in on you all talking about the engagement between the Rowle and Caldwell families today…” Alaric paused, his eyes turning cold, his voice laced with arrogance. “There’s something I need to set straight.”

He looked around at everyone present, his words ringing out with a finality that left no room for argument. “I’l only go through with the engagement if it’s Ophelia. If it’s anyone else, then there is no engagement, period.”

“Alaric…” Zoe’s eyes instantly filled with tears, and she slumped against the sofa, feeling completely drained, like all the strength had been sucked out of her.

‘Why is this happening?’ Zoe thought, her mind spinning.

‘All these years of holding on… was it all just me fooling myself? she wondered, her heart aching with

Tristan arched his brow, asking with a knowing look, “So, is Ophelia the reason you’re here today?”
