The masked man stared at me, his arms braced and his body poised to make a move. The second man also changed his stance.
This wasn’t the time to play games. Not without backup, not when their lives were
at stake.
“Choose.” His voice lowered into a growl to emphasize the threat he felt didn’t register the first time.
“Denise,” I said.
I had answered immediately without blinking and without looking at either of them. I didn’t give him the satisfaction he wanted when he created this scenario. He wanted me to be torn by the burden of choosing but I gave him an assertive
answer.
He went still and I watched him blinked as he tried to figure out his next move. He turned to Alyssa, hoping she would give him the response he had hoped from Kieran. I turned to her too.
Her face was still the same; there was no hurt or surprise on her face. I wasn’t surprised by her complete lack of reaction because she already told him he was going to choose his wife. He’d gotten exactly what she promised him, and she had no intention of giving him anything more than that.
The kidnapper moved toward Denise and I moved at the same instant. The chemical was still muffling my wolf, nothing but the pull of my bond carrying me forward.
A hand caught my shoulder and I shoved through it. Something metal clattered against the concrete floor and hell broke loose. All the plans and strategies went out of the window.

The tether gave way and Denise bounds came off. I reached her and scanned for her body despite the carnage that had broken out. There was no visible wounds, she was steady on her feet as her eyes scanned the room instead of locking onto my face with relief.
She was still working the problem, even now. Across the space, the second man had his phone raised and was still broadcasting before I understood that was what he was doing.
This wasn’t private, hadn’t been for a while. I heard the rumble of something that came in faintly through the walls. Engines, probably the pack security and cops coming in. The building was surrounded now.
It was both a blessing and a course. The kidnappers were trapped now and in desperation to escape, there was nothing they wouldn’t do. A cornered man with the detonation device to the bomb was still as dangerous as an unhurried one. I understood that even as the sound outside gave me a flicker of hope I didn’t fully trust yet.
“Kieran. Get her out of here.” Alyssa’s voice sliced through the chaos.
I looked at her. “Now, before that perimeter spooks them.”
I understood the logic but I was having a hard time accepting the conclusion that laid beneath it. She had given me the fastest route to the smallest number of casualties, the only hiccup was the route she had figured out didn’t include her.
I looked at Denise. She understood what Alyssa meant before I’d said anything.
Her jaw clenched as her eyes narrowed. “I’m not leaving her here.”
It wasn’t gratitude to me or forgiveness to Alyssa. Denise wasn’t going to betray her principles despite the precarious situation that the kidnappers had created. Yes, I had chosen her but it didn’t mean she was going to abandon somebody else because the choice had already been made.
Alyssa looked at Denise for what must had been the first time since I entered the room. The two of them had spent hours besides each other but this was the first time they were seeing each other for the first time. The irony wasn’t lost on me.

They held each other gaze for two seconds that was heavier and longer than any two seconds I would ever know. It seemed like the carnage had been muffled and time reduced to a snail’s dash across the ground as they passed whatever they wanted to, unsaid to each other.
Alyssa finally broke the moment. Her voice was level but left no room for argument. It was a commander’s voice. “I’m telling you to go. Both of you.”
“Go! Dammit.” There was no plea or trying to explain her decision. It was the flat certainty of a person who knew this was the only course of action and wouldn’t be deterred from it.
“Alyssa-”
“Don’t. You’ve already chosen. That’s done. Stop wasting time on what’s already been decided and move.”
My wolf gave a weekend howl, still suppressed by the chemicals that was still pouring into the complex. It understood what Alyssa was trying to do and was raising a weekend objection to it. She wasn’t asking to be saved later. She was saying there was only one time to save somebody and that somebody wasn’t her.
