Kieran POV
I parked two streets away and walked the rest of the way.

It had cost me valuable time but it was the only way I could do some recon about the building without announcing myself. I needed every advantage I could get before entering that building. Keeping to the shadows, I scanned traffic, sightlines and watching for anything or anyone that didn’t belong.
There were two visible entrances on the street side. A third that was obscured by dustbins, probably a maintenance access, the kind nobody bothered boarding up on a building this old. I went for that one.
The smell hit me the moment the door gave way and I instantly knew what it was. It was the same way you recognized a voice you heard before, it was the same compound from St. Mira’s.
They probably felt it was time I made it acquaintance. Nice to meet you. I thought wryly. It was the same signature that I had read about in the forensic report that went back to old bloodlines that were still murky to me.
This wasn’t coincidence; it was the same operation that had taken another branch. I was wrong about it been another attempt. Denise was inside. There was no time
to waste.
The chemical was heavy in the air, channeled into the building by some vents that I couldn’t see. I felt my wolf prowled around, gasping as it began to fight the hold of the chemical and then faltering as it eventually succumbed to the fumes.
It would have been too easy.
My strength and senses failing at the exact moment I needed them but I pushed against it anyway.
I moved with a start as I felt the bond move through me. The chemical couldn’t

shut it down. I felt Denise; she was alive somewhere ahead in the building. That certainty was the only thing keeping me moving at a controlled pace instead of simply running toward it blind.
I reached the main floor and saw them. They were both restrained against the same column, the device between them, just like the broadcast.
Without thinking, Denise commanded all my attention was I ran my eyes on her to check it she was hurt or conscious. She was alive. She wasn’t hurt and that was all that mattered as I felt something move with my chest.
Then I saw the man standing near them and then, a step behind him, almost lurking in the shadows, I saw the second one.
I hadn’t accounted for two. The broadcast had shown one captor and I had built my approach and tactical strategy around that fact. Two men meant two sets of eyes, two possible threats and a scenario that I hadn’t planned for. There was no way to correct it now standing in the open with both of them watching me.
The first man stepped forward and almost growled. “Choose.”
I didn’t answer or move even as I understood exactly what he wanted from that single word.
It was a game of cat and mouse. He wanted me to stare at both Alyssa and Denise while he watched, waiting for me to become ridden with guilt or longing so he could use that. That was the whole purpose of this, to break me.
I refused to give it to him immediately so I kept my eyes on Denise instead.
My eyes flicker with surprise that I hid almost instantly as soon as it appeared. Her eyes were darting around but not from fear. She was sweeping the area, scanning for whatever information she might find that would be of use to her. She was working the problem in her own way, the way she could.
I felt the pressure reduced in my chest slightly. I wouldn’t call it relief. It was closer to recognition than anything else. Despite her situation and almost at the brink of death, she was still herself. She wasn’t waiting to be rescued, even with whatever this compound was doing to her wolf the same way it was doing to mine. She was

already working toward her own way out, and some part of me understood that protecting her didn’t mean turning her into someone who needed to be carried through this.
I looked at Alyssa next. She wasn’t looking at me either. She was staring at the man who had spoken earlier. I knew that expression, it was the same look she had when she’d already decided something was a problem with a solution hiding somewhere inside it.
Two women responding the same way. What were the odds?
Neither of them was performing the scene he’d built this room to produce. He wanted two women be desperate for me to pick them. Instead he had one woman reading the exits and another reading him.
Alyssa spoke first; she looked straight at the masked man. “He’s going to choose his wife so let’s talk about what you actually want.”
The words landed in the room like something physical. She wasn’t callous or dismissive. She had said as it was meant to be and as it was: a fact. Denise was my wife and she wasn’t. It was the acceptance of an answer she had arrived at, by herself.
