James arrived Eli as I was heading back from the nurse’s station. Eli was calmer now; he held a toy car in one and James’ hand in the other.
A nurse intercepted them and rerouted towards another hallway.
“Where are you taking him?” I asked.
James glanced over. “Alyssa’s ward. They said he could wait there.”
There was nothing strange about. They disappeared round the corner and I continued to Denise’s room. Denise was safe, Alyssa was alive and I still owed Denise an explanation.
One thing at a time. I told myself and kept walking before a scent stopped me in my tracks before I cleared the corridor.
I was near Alyssa’s ward, her scent wasn’t hidden but underneath it, I got the whiff of another wolf in the vicinity. I stopped walking; I knew that scent.
I didn’t turn immediately and charged in there. I unclenched my fists, telling myself there was more to the story. James could have called him, he might be Alyssa’s emergency contact and Dante might had personal reasons to be near that ward that had nothing to do with Alyssa or Eli at all.
Then I heard Eli’s voice. He wasn’t crying, he was in the middle of explaining something and there was a tilt of laughter to his voice.
I finally turned around and checked the corner.
Eli was in a chair, his legs too short to reach the floor. Dante was crouched and the way he leaned forward, listening to Eli and talking animatedly, told me this wasn’t the first time Dante was meeting Eli.

“Mama’s sleeping.” Eli said.
“I know.” Dante said.
:
Eli’s voice was small. “She doesn’t like hospitals.”
Dante’s smile was wild. “Most people don’t.”
Eli considered his statement. “Papa doesn’t like hospitals either.”
There was a half-second pause before Dante replied.” I would think so too.”
I stayed where I was, watching things I didn’t want to be noticing.

Dante knew Eli was starring to fidget and Dante adjusted without being told. He knew exactly how close to sit, how to keep his voice low and even. Eli didn’t need reassurance before speaking to him. There was no pause from Eli the way children sometimes do around unfamiliar adults.
This wasn’t the first time. I understood within seconds that this dynamic between them had been built over time and Dante had been present enough times that Eli had stopped treating his presence as anything unusual at all.
I stood there and let the realization settle in, slow and complete.
Alyssa probably didn’t mean for this to happen. A child needed adults around him. She was dealing with a threat she couldn’t handle alone and he happened to be available when I wasn’t.
I remembered the months she’d spent in this city, and how she kept distance from me. I couldn’t count how many times she had ignored my texts and she’d carefully worked to keep Eli from becoming a complication in my marriage.
I’d accepted that distance because it allowed me manage everything properly. Denise in one box and Alyssa and Eli in another.
Eli was still too young to understand absence as anything than what it was. Someone was there or they weren’t; it was that simple to them.

Dante hadn’t taken anything from me; He’d simply filled a space I had left empty.
Dante glanced briefly down the corridor, and I stepped back before he could see me. I wasn’t afraid of him, I just had no interest in him knowing I’d watched this.
If I walked over there now, what would I even say? Would I accuse him of being present? Being kind to a frightened child in a hospital corridor? I had no answer, and the absence of an answer told me where the fault lied.
“Are you staying until Mama wakes up?” Eli asked.
Dante looked toward the ward door. “I’ll stay for a while.”
Eli nodded. “Okay.”
I’ll stay. Two words that I hadn’t told him but Dante did. And it made all the difference. I walked away before either of them noticed me.
I didn’t storm off. My hands remained limp beside me, my breathing level despite what I was feeling. I thought about the marriage, the secrecy, the distance I’d kept from my own son and the truth I still hadn’t given Denise. I had always believed there would be time later to fix what I was postponing now.
I was beginning to understand that later didn’t stop other people from building something in the space I left behind.
Denise was awake when I came into her room. She looked at me, and I watched her notice immediately that something had shifted, even without knowing what.
“You okay?” she asked.
“I’ll be fine.”
She countered. “That’s not the same as okay.”
