Kieran POV.

I heard the steps that wasn’t trying to be silent. Boots grinding dust and sand underneath it, some feet to my left.

A form slowly morphed out of the shadows. I didn’t need to confirm who it was. It was a guard from my advanced security team.

Of course James hadn’t listened. Why did I expect that he would have?

The masked man started glancing around with a frenzy that told me he knew he was cornered. He suddenly stood still, his poise taut, like a spring that had been drawn.

That was my cue to move. I placed my hand firmly against Denise’s back and pushed her to the guard that had just appeared. I shoved her and she slammed into the guard. This was no time to be careful or gentle. The guard caught her and waited for his instruction. I nodded and he understood his instructions without a

word from me.

“Kieran-” Denise started.

Her voice sounded a world away as my total focus was beamed on the masked man. Denise was safe with one of my men. I was the only person close enough to reach Alyssa.

He was already at wits end and was done with maintaining the façade that he was still in charge of the situation. His gaze alternating between Alyssa and the exits.

A cornered animal is always dangerous. He tapped on his belt and I heart the whirring of a small device on Alyssa’s restraints being armed.

I waited for the explosion and for half a second, the whole was perfectly clear. I could see the outline of everything and I could hear every sound but nothing happened.

The masked man’s expression shifted from surprise to confusion. He tapped the detonation device severally but nothing yielded. I caught the faint click sound of something beneath the casing. Probably a wire was jammed or the struggle had damaged a few things.

Whatever it was, I thanked fortune and made a dash for it, with the knowledge that I only had a few seconds regardless of whatever it was.

I was on her in two seconds, my hands already trying to pry the device free from her bounds. My hands were shaking from the adrenaline coursing through my veins. I continued, this wasn’t a task that needed finesse.

“Don’t touch it!” the kidnapper shouted, somewhere behind me, closer than I liked.

Finding the obstruction, I began to work the mechanism of her bounds. Something metal like, had fallen into the frame and was blocking the sensors from working properly. Her bounds were almost loose.

Come on! You can go faster than this!

I heard the click of something that fell into place and for a fraction of a second, I thought I had it.

I was halfway realizing it was the wrong click when it exploded.

Even while flying through the air, I realized something was off. The bomb had gone off but I was still intact and alive mostly. My proximity to be bomb should have been the end of me and not just my relocation.

The blast hurled a few feet away before I ever heard the sound, head and pressure moving through the room with murderous intent. The hard concrete floor punched my diaphragm, knocking out the air from my lungs, dust and smoke making a blanket over everything.

The explosion was smaller. I wasn’t sure about it but the jam changed something in the sequence. Smaller explosion didn’t mean Alyssa was out of harm’s way.

I lay there for a moment as my bearings were totally lost. I made myself move and my body resisted furiously: every joint was slow to answer, my vision blurred and

my ears rang loud enough to erase everything else.

I rolled over, lying on my belly and began to prop myself using my arms. Wincing as my arms wobbled, I managed to get up on my knees and looked through the smoke.

There was no sign of the masked men or his second. The sulphur in the smoke stung my eyes and I blinked them rapidly to keep them open.

Alyssa was completely still as I crawled toward her. It was an agonizing journey over broken concrete till I reached her and got my arms under her enough to turn her toward me.

I felt a wet and thick warmth between my fingers. Without looking, I knew what it was: blood. The amount of it told me enough before I found the injury.

I pressed my hand against it, hard, the only thing I knew to do that came to my mind.

She didn’t respond. I leaned down and hovered over face. She was still breathing, it was shallow but it was there.

I checked her pulse. It was faint but there.

“Alyssa.”

Nothing.

“Alyssa.”

Still nothing.
