My eyes were on the factory doors as I tried to break free from the guard that held me from running headlong into danger.
The place was rowdy with policemen trying to establish a perimeter, relaying information over their comms. The words jumbled around like static in my head. Nothing mattered till Kieran walked out under his own power toward the cordon, chemical residue streaked across his shirt, one arm held slightly stiff against his side.
He was walking. That was the only information I needed before anything else could matter.
Despite feeling overwhelmed and wanting to run to him to scream at him for making me feel this way, I remained still.
I watched him cross the distance, and when he reached me, neither of us said anything for a moment.
“Are you hurt?” he scanned me head to toe.
Should you be asking me that? I wasn’t the one who was near a bomb when it went off.
I held up my wrists. “It’s nothing serious. I’ll live.”
He studied the bruises for a while, longer than I felt necessary before he held my gaze. “And how is the rest of you?”
“I’m fine.”
Neither of us fully believed the other. It didn’t matter yet. We were both standing.
A second team brought Alyssa out on a stretcher. She was unconscious, and had

several tubes injected to her. The slight vapor on the oxygen mask told me she was alive but barely.
I watched him moved from grimacing through pain to fully alert, the way he did, when a crisis presented itself. The bond told me something I already guessed: he was going to go with her.
I watched him reach the ambulance just as the paramedics finished loading her in.
“Can I go with her?” he said.
“Sir, are you family? If not…”
“I’m-” He stopped.
I understood why his voice trailed off. He wasn’t her husband or official partner. He had no way of proving whatever he was to the paramedic in the chaos of the lot.
The paramedic watched him, her eyes kind but unrelenting. “We’ll take care of her.”
Kieran gave a restrained nod. “Okay.”
He turned toward my ambulance instead, and the paramedic there let him climb in without question. There was no need to verify our relationship. I noticed the difference even before I let myself think about it directly.
The ride was quiet. A paramedic ran through the routine questions while checking
me over.
“Are you experiencing any dizziness or blurred vision?”
“No.”
“Feeling nauseous?”
“No.”

“Do you have any trouble breathing?”
“No.”

He looked at my hands. “These will definitely leave a scar.”
“I know.”

Kieran was here but absent at the same time with several things racing through his mind at once like a formular one racetrack. The bond told me he was relieved I was alive but he was also worried about Eli and Alyssa. There was also something underneath that I couldn’t quite place but I didn’t think about it. It wasn’t the time or place so I reached across and put my hand over his.
He looked down at it for some seconds before I felt his hand completely relaxed under mine; Neither of us said anything.
We got to the hospital and I was put through a series of tests despite my insistence that there was nothing wrong. I kept looking toward the corridor anyway, waiting for word about Alyssa, and I knew Kieran was doing the same beside me.
He finally stopped a passing nurse. “Alyssa Stone. She came in from the factory.”
“She’s undergoing some tests.”
“I would like to see her. Is that possible?”
The nurse checked something on her tablet. “Are you family?”
I watched him hesitate again, the same pause from before. “No.”
“Then you’ll need to wait until the attending physician clears access.”
He stepped back, the muscle in his jaw tightening for a second before they released.
A doctor came through eventually, chart in hand.
“Alpha Nightshade?”

Kieran straightened immediately. “Yes.”

The doctor’s voice was sympathetic but professional. “I’m sorry. We have no record of you as an approved contact for this patient.”
“She’s Alyssa Stone.”
“I understand.”
“I need to know if she’s okay.”
