I woke up to see Kieran moving around the room. When I say up, he was staring at the tray it had offended
him.
He frowned. “You’ve barely touched this.”
I stifled a yawn. “I’m not thirsty.”
He poured me a cup before I could argue and moved to adjusting my pillow behind my back. There was a light crease on his face as he adjusted it with more concentration than was necessary.
“It’s fine,” I said.
“No. It’s too flat. It’s making you hunch your shoulders.”
“Kieran.”
He stopped, still holding the pillow and looked at me properly for the first time since he’d walked in. “Does
that hurt?”
“No.”
My response didn’t stop him from adjusting it anyway. I didn’t raise any fuss because I realized it was his way of maintaining whatever degree of control or composure he still had.
His gaze fell to my wrists as he turned my hands gently to look at it. The look on his face told me what was coming. “Did the nurse give you anything for this?”
“She applied some kind of balm on them.”
“Some kind of?”
“I didn’t ask what it was.”
He reached for the phone besides my bed and I grabbed his arm before he could grab it. “Don’t.”
He countered. “It might need something else.”
“It’s bruising.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you calling the nurse?”
He looked at me for a while before he answered. “Because I want to know it’s being treated properly.”

He arranged the blanket and checked the room temperature. He asked whether I was ready to ear, if the lights were to harsh or if my wrists still hurt.
I knew from past experience that he was reeling. Kieran never knew how to handle emotional burden of conversations or certain situationis and resorted to the practical things that he could handle.
The way he fussed over me told me it was probably a big issue and he didn’t quite know how to begin. I suspected what the issue was.
“Are you cold?” he asked again, a few minutes later.
I shook my head but rubbed my arms at the same time, making a face.
He almost smiled but it vanished before it was fully formed.
I almost asked about Alyssa but changed my mind. It hurt not being be able to be there for her or help her. I knew Dante was in the building and something happened that had changed something in him before he ever walked through my door.
However, I didn’t ask any questions about Alyssa because he would answer the question and the
conversation would become tense. I wanted to know how he was and asking about Alyssa would give me anything but that, so I kept quiet and watch.
He was standing beside the bed again, checking the IV line that didn’t need checking, when I finally asked him. “Are you alright?”
He didn’t answer right away. He avoided my gaze and stared at the IV that hanged on the metal rod.
He deflected. “You’re the one who was kidnapped.”
I wasn’t going to let him off that easily. “That’s not what I asked.”
The silence fell between us and I decided to let it be.
“You should rest. You were held for hours.” he tried.
“I know.”
“Your body needs-”
“Kieran.”
He stopped. I stared at him until he had no choice but to hold my gaze.
“Just take a seat.” I said.
He sat and neither of us spoke immediate after that. Sitting idly, I could feel him more through the bond than I had all day. He was exhausted by the guilt of what happened to Alysaa and the past. Today had taken quite a toll from the reserve he held within himself. Add the multiple parts of his life he was trying to
