Just then, a maid knocked on the door. "Miss, Madam says it's time. Please come downstairs."
Sylvie called out through the door, "Got it, I'll be right down."
"Come on, Stella. Let's go down together."
"Alright."
Stella followed closely behind Sylvie as they descended the stairs.
They stepped out into the elaborately decorated backyard, where all the invited guests were gathered.
After the formal birthday protocols concluded, the crowd naturally split into two factions: one in the front yard and one in the back.
Bagot and Edith Jennings gave a short speech thanking the guests for celebrating their daughter's birthday, offered her their blessings, and then moved to the front yard.
The front yard was reserved for the Jennings family's relatives and older friends, whom the couple would personally entertain.
As for the backyard, it was declared a space for the younger generation to mingle and have fun. Of course, the underlying hope was that Sheridan might find a suitable heiress among them.
Rhoda fluttered about like a social butterfly, aggressively greeting all the wealthy heirs and heiresses in an attempt to make the most of this rare networking opportunity.
She desperately needed to hook a rich bachelor of her own choosing; otherwise, she'd be forced to submit to her father's arranged marriage plans.
Scanning the crowd, Stella quickly spotted the same group of men she had drank with at Ember Bar.
So, they were all single!
They had brought dates last time, but clearly, they hadn't brought them tonight.
She and Steward Shipley had recently grabbed coffee, so they were fairly well acquainted.
She had also chucked a grape at Vernon Lowell on Serpent's Pass, so they weren't total strangers either, though Vernon still had no idea she was the one who had hit him.
She wasn't as familiar with Ian Eames and Hammer Sherwood, but they did share a drinking history.
All four of them obviously spotted her as well and immediately walked over to say hello.
Hammer spoke first. "Ms. Hawthorne, what a coincidence. Did Julius not come with you?"
