Actually, she hadn't been the one to call the cops last night anyway. The restaurant owner had.
That afternoon, Jason Blackwood returned from his business trip and texted Stella, asking her to meet him at the Midnight Bar. It was urgent—he needed to discuss the bet with Weber Harper, and she absolutely had to be there.
The Midnight Bar was Jason's own private establishment, though Stella had no idea.
When she arrived at the designated time, Jason was already waiting for her.
He handed her a glass of iced tea and sighed heavily. "Stella, you shouldn't get involved in tomorrow's race. That piece of trash Weber changed the location and the rules at the last minute. It's an extreme dirt bike hill climb now."
Stella took a sip of her tea. "Why the sudden change?"
Jason usually called her 'Sister-in-law' or 'Stella', but right now he was clearly incredibly stressed, skipping the pleasantries entirely.
"I only found out when I got back today," Jason said, his voice dripping with frustration. "He did it on purpose. He wanted to make sure I had zero time to prepare."
"So what's your plan?"
Jason slammed his fist into the sofa, his eyes blazing. "What can I do? I've messed around with dirt bikes before, but I'm garbage at hill climbs. There's no way in hell I can beat the ringer he hired.
And he didn't just change the rules—he publicized it. He turned our private beef into a massive, multi-rider spectacle.
He announced that if my proxy takes first place, he'll swallow his pride and hand over the land unconditionally.
And get this—he claims he changed it because street racing is illegal, and he wants to be a 'law-abiding citizen.' What an absolute joke! The guy is pure scum.
He constantly uses his family's money to bury his crimes. If he wasn't filthy rich, he would have been locked up years ago. Whatever. I don't even want the land anymore."
Stella shot him a sidelong glance. "You're really just going to roll over and take it?"
